This may have been posted about before but can not find it.
This set and the refractor set plus the other Topps Finest sets of this year. I'm confused about the protector coating being on some and not others.
I see the diff between the base and refractors but have cards with and without the coating from both sets.

I believe they all came with them as new product, but depending on the owner they left the coating on at their own discretion. I suppose it is just as much of a micro variation as the upper deck hologram or a dot or anything else.

I was just wondering if it was like the 1998 Finest On the 1998 cards you can see it clearly but the 1995 is real hard to tell.

Not a variation, just a choice to peel or not peel. No difference with regards to listing, grading or aftermarket value. Personally, I peel and they gleam.

I don't consider it a variation either, however some of the sets have it listed as a parallel called "no protected" or something like that.
I am a "protective coating intact" kind of guy, myself.

There was one set that came from the factory [out of packs] in both protector & no protector variations. I'm thinking 1998 Finest.
I wonder if player collectors like to have one of each in their collection?

What I have seen is that the 1998 Finest is diff from the other years. The non-protectors are more like a chrome finish. So if you remove the coating you still can tell they are diff. The same appears to go with the 1998 Refractor set. I have cards of both in hand.
The reason I asked was I have a 1995 finest card one with and another without the coating and they like a little diff. That may be due to the coating is bubbling up and that makes it look a little diff.

For the no-protector cards that I have in various sports, the back is embossed like the front.
