I joined the TCDB in Dec of 2013. My main collection focus is and has been since the '90's, football player, Herschel Walker. When I found this wonderful site, my goal was to collect as many different Walker cards as I could, and also to upload any images of those cards to the site, that weren't already there.
Through the administration and all the great members here, I became aware of the multitude of parallel and insert cards for Herschel, many of which I never knew existed. One of these parallels which always intrigued me, was the 1994 Upper Deck Electric Gold #262. For me, it was like seeing a unicorn. I was able to acquire the Electric Silver parallel, and upload that image shortly after I joined here, but the quest for the Electric Gold remained elusive and unfulfilled.
It got so bad, that I actually purchased a couple more Electric Silver examples, and when I stared long enough at the card I was about to purchase, could have sworn that the buyer made a mistake, and that it was actually Electric Gold. Kind of like seeing an oasis in the desert. Only when I got the card in hand, did I realize I came up short once again.
Through some research, I was able to find out that Electric Gold cards were inserted 1 in every 37 packs. Not exactly plentiful.
Still, after looking at the Electric Gold checklist, I noticed that several members had uploaded images of Electric Gold cards of other players. Still, Herschel's space for that card remained blank. Not EBay, COMC, SportsLots, Burbank Sportscards, Dave & Adam's, or numerous other sources could help me fill in that blank space in my collection.
So I am happy to say that the missing space is today filled. After six plus years, something I never thought I'd find was found. That, in a nutshell, is what I love about this hobby.
This card was by no means expensive, I have spent a lot more on individual cards, but I can truly say that I derived as much pleasure from this discovery and addition to my collection, than from any other card in it.
It may be that I suddenly come upon several more examples of this very card in the near future, though I doubt it. Even so, nothing will replace the thrill of the initial discovery.
Yours in collecting,
Banny
There's no intrinsic value in cardboard, but there's a lot of value in doing something you enjoy!
