I can't remember where I heard it but this has stuck with me ever since: If something touts itself as free or no cost, then you are the product being sold.
I remember when I joined the site a few years back and immediately loved it. Although, occasionally, it bogged down due to lagging ads, it ran quite smooth. However, I recognized that I kept getting the same ads over and over and some were slower to load than others (I have no idea why). I noticed the banner that suggested switching to a subscription to get rid of the ads. I checked into it and for a measly $5 a month I have been ad free for years.
I will be honest, I am no fan of subscription-based proprietary software (I need a lot of it for my business), but when it comes to my entertainment, I don't want to be bogged down by car commercials and ads for social anxiety medicine. I pay my subscriptions to Spotify and Netflix and enjoy ad-free streaming without being bombarded by things I don't want or need.
I cut the cable about 12 years ago and have been happy about it ever since. I suggest trying the $5 option for a bit rather than dropping out altogether. For $60/year, this site is beyond worth it.
