Sad to see Topps decided to unretire #7 this year. What are your thoughts? Is Gary Sanchez worthy? Will Topps re-retire it next year? Will they ever come to an agreement with the Mantle family?
I'm used to Topps not being very fast with their transaction updates, but Yoenis Cespedes never received a (base) card in a Tigers outfit and yet they put Cameron Maybin in Series 1 as a Tiger when he was the very first transaction at the end of the year last year. About as frustrating as a Guido Knudsen card last year but not Alex Wilson or Dixon Machado or Bruce Rondon...
Sorry for the rant.

I'm glad they unretired #7. I'm not big on retiring uniform numbers, so I think retiring card numbers is even dopier.

I certainly don't think card numbers should be retired ever. Retiring a card number would only make sense if players were consistently given the same card # year after year. Just my thoughts. I dno't have any issue with retiring jerseys.

Retiring a card number is nonsensical. Why don't they just make every card number 7 a Mickey Mantle card every year/release.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Retiring jersey numbers: fine.
Never liked the retired Mantle number. I know 52 was his rookie card, etc. But was Mantle so much better than Mays, or Aaron, or Griffey? Why single him out? Always felt wrong.
Of unretiring it just feels weird.
Sigh.

I wasn't a fan of the card retiring because it messed up my 9-pocket page numbering and my set counts. I'm glad they went back and "re-produced" the missing #7's from the 1997-2005 Topps sets, and I'd like them to go fill in the more recent missing #7's as well. Although I think "un-retiring" a card kind of a slap in the face, it had to be done, and I hope they never retire another card again. Dumb idea. If they want to dedicate a certain card number to a player as a tribute for a few years, that's fine with me. A tribute can be undone, but a card retiring? Imagine the Yankees unretiring #7 because a modern star wanted to wear it?

I wouldn't expect anything specific. It changes quite often.

I was waiting for them to retire numbers from other players. Never liked it that it went on after more then year. I understand okay to skip a number to honor someone for just one year but for a long time nope.

Robert “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone.” ― A. Bartlett Giamatti robertkimble.us/tradingcards

Topps had retired #7 before, as well, and then unretired it when they got the rights to use Mantel's image and then reretired it when that ran out. I assumed that they were hoping to get a new license to use his likeness again and just didn't.

What I do not get is how did the mantle estate get the #7 card spot. Did they buy it or was it just because it was mantles number. I think the Babe is more deserving to have a card number retired after him.
