Astros announce Richard's passing at 71

Sadly a stroke cut his career short in 1980 before he could pitch in the NLCS against the Phils, but he put up amazing numbers in the late 70s

Sad news indeed. I dare say when Nolan Ryan joined Houston, Richard was just as good if not better at the time. What could have been with that early-80's franchise...

Terrible news. My favorite player growing up.

Sad to learn of his passing.  Was saddened when his career was shortened.   An imposing figure at 6'8".   

Sad to hear of his passing. During the last half of the '70s, Richard had some amazing seasons and was definitely one of the game's most dominant pitchers. No less than Johnny Bench said he was the toughest pitcher he ever faced. J.R. fell on hard times beginning in 1980, with serious health issues and even a period of homelessness but was able to turn things around and even become a minister. May he rest in peace.

Truly sad to hear of his death, but certainly glad that he had turned his life around to overcome such misfortune at a young age.

since houston wasn't on the national stage, and only 2 national games at  that per week and  no national leageue home market near where i grew up, i never saw him pitch much, but the stories  and numbers proved what he was and could have been.  a sad end to his career, much like don wilson of the astros a few years earlier.  rip j.r.

Dang. I was just looking at his 1980 topps card the other day while sorting some cards. He was dominant.

Hearing this is indeed sad news. Knowing how dominant that he could be is what almost makes it sadder. A short great career for a tall great man? R.I.P.
