This is sad and must have been horrible to witness in person.  I remember watching the Buffalo Sabres game in 1989 when Clint Malarchuk took a skate,  slicing his carotid artery and partially slicing his jugular vein.  Miraculously he survived.

I watched that game too. I'll never forget that brief glimpse of blood on the ice before the cameras moved away. It was miraculous that he not only survived but returned to game action a couple weeks after.

My heart goes out to Johnson's family. Can't imagine what they must be going through.

Very sad indeed RIP Adam Johnson, Penguins and Ducks paid a nice tribute prior to their game last night.
