Cards without the serial number likely came from the Pacific bankruptcy auction. Secondary market sellers like to call these cards "proofs" for whatever reason. They were just replacement stock that Pacific kept and were not meant for distribution like this. If the card needed to be replaced, they would stamp the replacement card with whatever number it needed and then send it out.
For cards I have that were from this source, I count them as the retail released card.

@tpxcards, do you mean you treat these as the base or as, in this case, the silver portrait parallel (even though this one isn't numbered)

Well I didn't attend the auction but I remember when it happened. They were done like most bankruptcy auctions. There were boxes of stuff people bid on and then did whatever with them. Some people bulked out lots on Ebay. That's how I got the ones I have, one guy made team lots of the stuff he got from the auction and I bought the Phoenix Coyotes lot.
I treat them as the card they are supposed to be. For example, all of these I have are the un-numbered versions that came from the auction.

Now technically there could be an issue with "collation" of things like this. Not everyone uses the site and if they did and all 10 of the regular versions were accounted for, then mine would be the 11th. And any cards that were stamped 1/1 could technically be 2/1 because a replacement might exist.

As far as I have found out all replacements of SN cards. (per several guys that have worked at Collector's Edge and Pacific when they went under). The damaged card has to be sent in and then they stamp the replacement card at that time and sends it out. No extra SN card just laying around but cards for stamping are. That said: it does not mean someone does not stamp cards 1/1 (or any SN) on the side.
I got a card of one of my players that was a Gold Signature SN /5 but it was not SNed. So my card was a replacement card for a card in a parallel set and all of them were numbered and different colors not like some sets. (Only different is the SN). He said he got it from a card company auction and wished he would have purchased more.

There are several examples of cards in a card company's "vault" being sold off when they went bankrupt. The "vault" was full of replacement cards to be sent out in place of cards damaged in shipping and such OR just for cards missing in packs. Pacific was maybe the first and followed closely by Collector's Edge. There were companies that folded before them but the assets were bought by another card company first. Classic/Finish Line/ScoreBoard got absorbed by Fleer/Skybox (that was also a merger before then). Fleer/Skybox went bankrupt around 2006 and was completely bought by Upper Deck. Playoff was bought by Donruss/Leaf a few years earlier and absorbed the Playoff vault. Donruss/Leaf/Playoff Corp. eventually sold everything to Panini around 2009. Press Pass Inc. shut down completely and immediately on 1/01/2015 and sold off their entire vault to Dave & Adams Card World. D&A immediately set to making "packs" of cards from the Press Pass vault (and called it Hit Parade). Hit Parade was so successful that D&A started doing that with cards they had in stock from every sport and non-sport. Most of the Press Pass cards were "vault" cards that should have had an SN on them but didn't. I'm sure I'm leaving out some info here that others can chime in on (like Score/Pinnacle), but there are tons of cards out there from the late-90's to mid-2010's that should have SNs on them but do not have them for this exact reason.

Pacific did not go bankrupt! Pacific’s brands were Sold, and still being made by Panini’. The sale did not include our inventory. Our inventory was sold to dealers including some leftover bulk cards. Those dealers were Fairfield, Beckett and Burbank Cards. There were NO cards sold at the auction just some surplus equipment and furniture . No cards were sold at that auction!
Total fake news get the facts right, there were no boxes of cards people bid on. That’s total Made up by a person that has no idea what their talking about. I still have the auction brochure just a bunch of equipment and furniture no cards .
The card was a replacement card, only 3-5 replacement cards (no serial number) were made some were numbered and used as replacements. This card came from one of those dealers.

Thanks for the clarification. Repeating stuff is not always the best. I tend to believe people when they tell me stuff.
As I look back, he stated a card company but not a card manufacturer and getting it at an auction. After I had gotten the card and asked about no SN on it. So what company and what auction? I'm happy with the card at the price I paid but should have seen the red flag how he listed it. He offered to take it back and pay for shipping back.
The card I purchased was a 2017 Panini XR - Autographs Gold - Quincy Enunwa.
