I have a few of these in my extras. One is gold, one is silver. I have 4 unique players in my extras. Thanks for the help.

Foil that faded/chipped over time. It was a problem with a few sets in that era

Thanks for the reply. There is no visible damage to the circles. These are a solid silver foil. If it is fading, wouldn't the Gold strip at the bottom of the card, where the player name is also fade?

It could've also been a printing defect where the wrong foil was applied. A few Ultra sets had this problem, and I believe some of the Stadium Club did too. There was no Medallion parallel on 1996 football

Exactly what Ed said in the last reply. A lot of the 1996 Ultra football cards had silver foil instead of gold foil. It was a printing issue. There was no parallel in the 1996 set. It confused me too when I first came across these types of "errors". Just a printing defect though.

Thanks to both of you. I was just trying to get them added to the DB if they were legit. I have the entire Chiefs set (5 cards) in both Gold and Silver, so my PC is good. Just trying to help out others that might want these variations.
At what point does something like this become an error set and get listed on TCDB?
Thanks!!

It won't. It's a printing defect and/or a result of a passage of time. As pointed out this affected more than just this set, there are MANY sets across all sports during this era where the gold has gone to silver. It was not an intentional design choice and release by the manufacturer.

I had one that was half and half. Plus some Topps Gold that the Gold foil was only on part of the name. Just a printing error and Yes they get out in packs.
I have a few misprints in my collection just because they are different. (odd)

Something similar came through in an IR the other day.
Real life example: 1996 Fleer baseball also had an issue with the foiling of the set. The base cards were a matte finish with gold foil and the Tiffany parallel was on high gloss paper with holo-silver foil. Seems one of the printers they used didn't understand the foil that they had, and produced large quantities of matte cards with holo-silver foil and glossy cards with gold foil. Someone added these "alternate parallel" sets to the database. When the validity of those sets was questioned, Admin looked at them, and removed both "matte/silver" and "glossy/gold" sets, deemed as "printing glitches". Therefore, and especially with Fleer products of this time frame, these are not eligible to be added to TCDB.
