Card Identification Forum

Can anybody help me with this. This is one of them cards that has got me stumped. I dont know where is from?

I recently bought a Griffey lot and there were a handful of cards like this and similar to this with the plain back like that. I suspect they are some sort of bootleg knockoffs.

It should be a 1990 Broder blue border.

I think i had trouble finding this card in the TCDB and gave up as well and just put it back in my box.  But if you search Broder online, you can find this card.  I think it was a set of 6 at least (or there were 6 griffeys from that set)  its one of those oddball ones.  

I believe broder is a term for oddball and not necessarily a brand like "Pacific".  but searching that term online and you can find it.  there may be a checklist somewhere.

Just for the record, Broder can actually be a "brand" name as a guy named Rob Broder made several series of unlicensed sports cards throughout the 1980s. He was kind of the first and biggest one doing this. "A broder" became a generic term to mean an unlicensed, even illegal in most cases, sports card. It's similar to how the word band-aid is used. It's actually trademarked term for an "adhesive bandage", but even if you've stocked your house with them from Target, Wal-Mart, or CVS brands, if someone gets a scrape or cut that needs one, someone's going to say "Get a band-aid". That's how broder has evolved in the hobby. Even if the card was made by "FBN Corp", it's called a broder. (Yes, FBN = Fly By Night.)

If this guy took the time and his money to make such a card, coodos to him. He diserves to get a slice of the pie, we all know that there is plenty of pie in the sport entertainment industry. It is a well done card and I support any person or people who try to make a living.

I agree with your premise, but I'd hate to fight the ensuing legal battle with Big Brother - whoever that may be in this case.

Matt, as someone who used to work for a card company that had to jump through the various hoops to produce cards legitimately, I respectfully disagree.

We paid photographers to get quality photos. Broder and the likes stole their photos from other sources (many times from published posters or other sources who had paid for those services). We had to pay fees to MLB and NBA for use of the logos (and when those licenses expired, we were required to airbrush off logos or risk being sued), Broder and the likes had no such worries.

Essentially, these types of cards were not legal to make. This is why few of them have any sort of copyright info (they weren't copywritten) or company info (because they didn't want to be caught). Sorry, but with the knowledge I have about the production of cards, and how these types of cards were made, I have zero respect for them and give no kudos to them.
