         I remember hearing about different holograms on the rear of cards from different Upper Deck Sets. I can't really find anything with a forum search about the 1989 Upper Deck Baseball Set. 

      I got around to entering my complete set into my collection in the Data Base and noticed some differences in the holograms:

1- In the diamond hologram some have the rows of Upper Decks facing correctly all running the same way.

2- Some have the rows of Upper Decks upside down .

3- Some have them facing correctly but one would be upside down.

4- Some would have them upside down with one facing correctly.

     I know to much time on my hands and nothing to do.

      So what should be done ?  Leave them as they are, split them up?  Any ideas or comments?

I remember a chat or two about that. If I recall it was some of the early years of UD they just reused unused holograms from the previous year. I also seem to recall this effected the Football cards, they used the baseball holograms for all the sports I think.

The hologram variations that I have seen for 1989 Upper Deck baseball is either baseballs with the Upper Deck text or no baseball and Upper Deck text.

I know exactly what he is talking about here. The Upper Deck text alternated in the 1989 holograms. One was right-side up with the next right-side down. The next line below that was upside down completely from the previous line. That continued through all of the holograms. When the holograms were added to the cards, there could be any number of combinations. Because of the diamond shape of the holograms, it's all about the placement of the cut of the hologram sheets before they were added to the cards.

The "no baseball" is the only true variation for the 1989 UD holograms.

Since any variation is based on the TYPE of hologram foil used (gold, text only, diamond logos, etc.) not the positioning of the foil for the hologram, these are not considered variations.

There's a similar issue with cards that have "rainbow" (iridescent) foil. The coloring of the foil on the card depends on what part of the foil sheet gets used.
