This may be a bit morbid... but what are your plans for your collections when you get too old to enjoy them or pass away? I've been looking at some of the absolutely massive collections on here and it got me wondering what I'll do with my modest, but growing, ~10k hockey card collection when I kick the bucket.

I'm around 40, married with no plans of kids. I have a nephew that like collecting cards at the moment, but not to the extent that they'd really want a collection of god knows how many I'll add over the next (hopefully) 40-50 years. 

I've seen collections pulled from storage lockers and sold off and it's kind of sad.

So, what happens to your cards when you die?

You have asked a question that has been asked many times.   If one would take some (lot of) time and look at all the postings (you do not have to read them just look at the titles).    You will find answers to a lot of questions.

I wished there was a way to link posting to a topic.   Then all the postings about prices or any others would be in one area.

My answer on all of them has been.   My wife plans on burning them.

My plan is to down size, catalog them all (sets or graded cards) into a spreadsheet with rough prices. 

May change if I have grandkids who are interested in them but I'm many years away from that. 

100K plus cards in my collection right now and if you walked in off the street to look at what I have, one would be overwhelmed. I get overwhelmed from time to time even. 

Trying to put an accurate dollar figure on what I currently own would be nearly impossible. Couple that with the fact that I'm a big hockey collector living in the states and the number of potential buyers shrinks rapidly. 

Odd how many times this has been asked already this year. Not odd that it is being asked, but it used to be a thread or two per year. Several in the first 2 months of 2024 is odd. As for me and my collection, I hope to be able to slowly sell off bits of my collection in my later years to other collectors. However, if something drastic happens to me before that time, my mother and brother have both been instructed to mass-sell my entire collection to Dave & Adam's Card World for a specific minimum price that I update every few years. D&A buys huge collections and will even fly out a representative to check out the collection and make an offer.

With a collection that ranges from 1889 to present and includes over 120K individual cards, plus hundreds of sealed packs/boxes/sets and then hundreds more other types of sports collectibles in many sports and even non-sports stuff, D&A would certainly be interested in buying my collection. That is the "worst-case scenario" though. I hope to continue enjoying (and building) my collection over the next 30-40 years before starting to sell them off myself.  I have no children to pass them down to and I doubt my sister's children would want as much as I have. So I do have 2 plans for my collection as I age. Let's hope that the first one plays out the way I want it to and #2 never has to be acted upon.

I have been pondering this very thing for a while. I am considering shopping my collection, but, maybe some of you will agree, it will NEVER fetch what I believe it is worth because few people know the amount of effort it took for me to build it. Oh well...

Another idea is to modify my trust/will and bequeath specific team sets to particular friends and family in places like Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, etc. This way it will surely go to someone who could appreciate it.

Still thinking...
