Completely agree. He was not wheeling and dealing; he was a collector who could afford the higher end cards. We (most of us as collectors) realize what we can afford and set our budget for the hobby. I think we all wish we could bid on some of the items on auction.
The only shame is that there will be many investors who will drive the price up at this auction. The collectors who might wish to buy something will have to have very deep pockets.

I agree that it seems like he was a true collector. If I had that kind of money, though, I wouldn't go for the highest graded cards. I'd just try to get as many cards as I could. That aspect of the collection does make it seem like the money side was in the back of his head.

I deleted my previous comment because I realized that I had misread it at first. It sounds like he has been collecting for decades. It looks like he actually cared about collecting his own cards and not driving the price up.

From the brief article I think he is a collector, or maybe more accurately it would be unfoair to say he wasn't a collector with only that information. Just because he has more money than most to spend on a hobby does not make him automatically an investor or flipper or any of the other terms which are now seen as deregatory.
(Heck, you can be an investor and a collector if you want).
His collection obviously extended beyond just sports cards judging by the article so it does not appear that in the last year he suddenly decided to jump on the sports card band wagon to make some money,

@dodgydave I agree. He looks to be a well invested collector. Waiting for each years release.

He had been at this for a while certainly, and likely had help amassing those types of scarce pieces.
I personally really don't sign up for labels and tags collector, flipper, investor, hoarder, everyone has different amounts of $ to
dispose towards cards and immeasureable amounts of time to dedicate also. Which is why it's also time to do away with Academy Awards(just like sports, not a level playing field but that's a topic for another day)

He's gone.
His cards are still here.
A sobering reminder for people like me that we can't take them with us.
Thanks for the article!
