I was a high school senior in 1988 and my principal was an auctioneer. He hired me for an auction one Saturday to help carry items out of a store that has been closed for years. They had Texaco signs and others selling for several hundred dollars. I found a match box and asked if I could buy that. It had a baseball player on it with no info.
He said just keep it as a bonus. I put it in my pocket. I had it for years and recently showed it to my nephew who is the Baseball Coach at the high school he and I went to. He immediately said that's Ted Williams. Him being a Sox fan he said he'd know that swing anywhere.
I looked it up and sure enough 1955 Ohio Blue Tip Match Box Ted Williams. You can buy it pretty cheap but I consider that in the top three of my favorite pieces. A 1976 RC Cola Can that came out of the ground in 1995 when I was working construction laying water lines is in the top 3 also. And finally Cal Ripken Jr's High School Scouting Report I acquired in a collection I bought.
All of these are pretty cheap pieces but the act of stumbling on treasure is why I like them so much.
