If you collected/sorted cards in a certain way forever, Would you consider changing styles to more match the way the TCDb sorts, organizes and lists cards?

I have done that except for the company sets. I still sort as Fleer Ultra, Topps Stadium Club, Donruss Triple Play, Score Select, etc.

Yes, sound advice.
With the reshuffling of the Fleer Sticker Sets, which I've collected since the '70s, I think my physical sets need to match the listings on here. ........And another task !

If you're talking about cards you are selling/trading, it makes sense, since that's the order they come up in a trade request (for now). Since you seem to struggle with completing trades in a timely manner due to your quantity. That would surely speed up the process for you. But your actual collection to keep, I would not switch. I tried that for a few months once and it took the fun out of it for me.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Yeah I've been regorganzing based on TCDB now which means Ultra no longer goes with Fleer but right before Upper Deck Etc. Makes it easier for eventual trades and sales to find things as quickly as possible.

Exactly this. I have the "SwamiLee" collection sorted exactly as it appears in the database which allows for pulling the cards in minutes. My personal collection(s) are still the same way they always were. Any changes over the years have simply been because of personal preference and nothing to do with TCDB.

-- Dan -- Note: Please see my profile for more info regarding trading (section updated 3/4/2024). I have added a large portion of my inventory to the site, and currently have trading turned on (details are in my profile).

I changed my collection style due to the overall subpar nature of modern cards. I went from being a set collector first and foremost but now the main goal is the project of getting one card of everyone to get one in my sports. I will still do sets if possible but there is basically only one real set per year in two of my sports.
While I didn't change because of the Database, the new project would not have been possible without the Database. I looked at literally every listing to determine what qualifies for the project and who I was missing.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. I am a Set Collector first. I then try to Collect a seperate Team Set for the Yankees, Braves, and Red Sox. Yankees and Braves are for me. Red Sox are for my nephew who will inherit my Collection as I have no children. He is the Baseball Coach at the High School he and I both attended. He will take good care of them and I believe hold onto them for his daughter (maybe another son or daughter one day). I seperate by Brand and Year. I do have my duplicates seperated based on TCDB. One style I have changed is I always sorted my Sets by Team. I keep my Sets in Binders and I was always having to juggle things around to add Cards because I had screwed my Count up somehow. I now sort by number and just skip spots to add that Card later. It took a minute for me to like it but it is working good now and I am ok with it,

I have changed a little bit to match TCDB, but some things will never change. Absolute/Absolute Memorabilia cards are now lined up with Playoff or Panini instead of being at the front of each year they are made. Insert sets are lined up with the actual product they came with instead of by A-B-C order mixed with other products from the same company. But Donruss will always be in the D-slot and Score will always be in the SC-slot, even though they are both made by Panini now. Fleer Ultra has always been Ultra and always will be. Stadium Club goes before Topps and after SP/SPA/SPx. SP brands will not go with my UD cards because they always seemed to be a seperate entity. Oddball, food-issue and sponsor cards are added in the place where they should be based on the actual title given on here. For NASCAR fans, all Press Pass cards now get put together in A-B-C order by brand (Press Pass, Eclipse, Optima, Premium, Stealth, VIP, etc.) and all Wheels or Maxx products follow the same path. Maxx does not go with Upper Deck cards after UD bought the company and Traks cards made by Press Pass still fall under Traks, not Press Pass.
All of that sounds complicated, but it really isn't when you know the history of the sports and the card companies. So TCDB changed a little bit of my sorting but only to make it better. The ones that would confuse me stay the same b/c that's how I've done it for so long and it seems right to me.
