I'm not a big fan at all. I think it's the worst Topps design since 2017. I like that they're bringing back borders, but the design as a whole just looks like a hodge-podge of random elements. The thing about vintage designs is that they were simple and uncluttered. Think about 1959 Topps, 1961 Topps, 1965 Topps etc. On the front they just had the picture, the design, and some stuff like the player's name and team name. Not so much for 2021 Topps.
If the backs are okay, that will make it better, but you can't bet on that with Topps nowadays.

I don't mind the look. I haven't been a fan of their designs since 2016, so maybe if enough people hate it, it might be easier for me to pick up a pack or two when I go to Walmart.

I hope that is a joke that I just don't get (or maybe I do). Topps' claimed their 40th Anniversary was in 1991 and then the 50th in 2001 and the 60th in 2011. So the 70th in 2021 fits their timeline.
I actually hope you are catching the real timeline that Topps is claiming these a year late. If 1951 was their first set(s), then the 1991 set would have #41, not #40. All of their anniversary sets are off by a year and always have been. The 2021 products would be the 71st year of Topps products being produced, not the 70th!

Look like the general reaction to the 2021 Topps design is very similar to the general reaction to the 2020 design. That is, mixed reactions. Some people hate it and others like it but nobody is saying it's one of the best. But have you seen 2020 Topps Chrome yet? The "Chrome-y" gloss makes that design look much better. I'd bet the same thing happens with the 2021 design whenever 2021 Topps Chrome is released. Now I'm thinking that the flagship design is now primarily created with Topps Chrome in mind. (It's probably been that way for years, ya think?)

Yes it was a joke. OCHawkeye was referencing the fact that it seems like Topps just celebrated their 40th anniversary, even though it was 30 years ago already...

I'll never quit collecting entirely, but I am downsizing. Check out my COMC store and help me thin out what I don't want so I can buy cards that I do want. See something you like? Send me a message on here, and we can knock the price down quite a bit. I'll even take a bit of a loss if it means getting you a card you really want.

Unfortunately don't count on it. Terrible design has never stopped the hype machine. See 2020 Topps, for example.

I think the cards would look better with less elements. Slashes, colors, honeycomb patterns and the lines along the left are too much. Keep it basic, I came up with something along the lines of what I am thinking.

That's definitely an improvement.
