Maybe she wants to find a way to hide "our little boy's hobby" in something attractive so that when friends come to visit, she is not embarassed.

I can't wait to see the final product! That's a cool idea and solution.
However, while it seems cool, it just doesn't fit my collecting style. I want a custom piece for my binders. I have the design ability and the woodworking capability to build what I want, but I just don't have the drive to do it. What I currently have works and that drops my priority for building what I really want. I have several bookshelves of wood, metal or both and a cabinet that is steel-reinforced plastic. My problem is the stacking of the albums (I lay them flat on the backs). I'd like a tiered structure inside of my shelves to allow easy removal of one album without disrupting any others. I have ideas, but just haven't acted on them yet. Every time I start pulling cards for a large trade, I think of how it could be faster and better. I don't have a problem with the boxes of cards, it's pulling or adding cards to albums that causes minor issues for me.
Maybe seeing your final product will push me to act on the thoughts in my head.

spaz, wondering if some kind of map drawer thing would work for you? Thick enough so binders could lay flat. Wide and deep enough that maybe you could have them three wide and two deep to make it easy to get to each binder without stacking?
One thing I tried to do was keep this about one thing: cards I have nice PCs for that I have to keep in boxes because of thickness and graded cards. I didn't want to try and also accommodate binders, or set boxes, etc. Didn't want to try and do too many things.
Keep me posted if you decide to build something for all your binders and what you go with.

I have this for my binders. I bought these shelves from Michael's a number of years ago, They can stack horizontally as well.

A larger version of the map drawer thing would work, but it would have to be huge. My PC's (NASCAR drivers, STL Cardinals, and all 3 NFL teams) currently live in the steel/plastic cabinet. It's 6 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide. But it doesn't have enough shelves, so my binders are stacked 5-6 high depending on album thickness. To stack them that high and still have them fit safely, I put cardboard shipping boxes at the back of the cabinet for the top 2-3 albums to balance b/t the box and the lower albums. If I could get 3-4 more shelves for it, that would work great for 2 albums stacked on each side of each shelf. There's room in the middle for boxes for cased/graded cards and other random stuff I put in there. I can't just buy another cabinet and switch the shelves for 2 reasons: #1 is that cabinet was expensive (about $500, but I got it for free) & #2 is the cabinet only has 3 shelves and the middle one screws into the cabinet walls. The other 2 are plastic with square steel tubes that snap into the shelves under the front and back. Those are the ones I need more of and there slots in the walls to add them, but I haven't found any so far. I've thought of building a staircase-style structure to go in the cabinet for each stack so that each album has it's own platform to rest on. All my trader albums are on other shelving around the basement stacked 3-4 high. That's a bit easier to deal with than the cabinet.
