As much as I enjoy building (or just outright purchasing) Topps flagship sets, I've come to the realization that I'm limited on space and no longer have the room to continue housing them. In order to continue collecting I've got to do something different, as I am also a team set collector- which further complicates matters.
Having given it some thought, I've decided maybe I need to do 'mini' sets for each Topps flagship release. Each year would consist of:
- 1 sample from each team
- Rookie or first Topps cards
- Final Topps card of players
- Playoff subsets
- league leader cards
- HOF players
- All-Star cards
Do any of you guys or girls do something similar? Am I missing something else that I could include?

I'm just going with a Cubs team set from each set. At least that is my plan.

You could up it a little to include MVPs, Cy Young, other award winners, and maybe the whole roster of that year's World Series winner.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster. |

Man do I know what you mean. Between tight budget and limited space I realized the same thing. Now instead of the Topps sets I'm switching to smaller sets like Ginter or Heritage. Maybe Optic. Instead of 700+ card sets it will be 350 down.

I started to bastardize my sets by including the parallels as part of my set. Then after the "set" is complete it then allows me to try and upgrade the set to all parallels.

I think you're doing the right thing to continue collecting. We all at some point in time have either stepped away for the same reasons you've outlined. I've considered taking a bigger break than I have already to rethink my collection habit. It takes discipline to enjoy anything within reason and card collecting is no different.

I discovered this Site in July. I had just bought for Years and seperated Sets, Yankees Duplicates,49ers Duplicates, Lakers Duplicates, and Favorite Players with no hope of Trading like I did with my Brother and Neighbor boys when I was little. After joining TCDB I have been overwhelmed with Trade offers and information. After months of entering and Trading and thinking..was that a good Trade? Did you get what you needed or wanted? I have learned to figure out what I want from day to day according to Matches and just have fun and enjoy Collecting. Whatever I don't accomplish I will leave to my Nephew to take over. If my Collection gets to big for my House I guess he will get my Collection earlier than expected.
