Random Card of the Day

Year: 2008

Set: Topps Heritage (Rate)

Card: #152 Brian Bannister

“ I just don't like the Heritage cards much. I like how they aren't glossy, but I can't think of one design I really liked. As for Brian.... eh, he was forgettable, never got out of the shadow of his dad. ” -jupiterhill

“ Daddy Floyd Bannister was a great pitcher. Brian however didn't get that lucky. He retired after pitching with the Yomiuri Giants in March of 2011. ” -yokonashiwa

“ The 1959 Topps baseball set is my favorite card set of all time ((in point of fact i'm three Mantles and a Hoot Gibson away from completing it)), but i've never been able to pull the trigger on the Heritage set. The original design is so great that little things like the (R) and (tm) symbols by the team names really cheapen the look...in addition, this particular dude looks like someone you'd see in an old comic book ad for Hypno-Coins. ” -revnorb

“ Ahhh, the '59 set was a beautiful set. ” -CluelessJoe

“ Thank god the Royals dropped black from their unis. They are the Royals, not the Blacks. ” -jlaz10

“ It was a long downward slide for Bannister after this... ” -UNC_Samurai

“ My only gripe about this 1959 design - the lowercase letters for the players' names. Otherwise, nice. And as far as the Topps Heritage sets go, it's a nice alternative for those who liked (or loved) the old designs, but can't afford the old sets. ” -vrooomed

I too do not like the heritage sets.   Bottom line is that it is not a 1960 or 1965.   What's the point?

I don't mind the heritage and I think it is kind of cool that they have been going year by year, but now with Archives there is too much retro rebranding. Topps needs to dump either Heritage or better yet Archives, even though I liked archives in 2012. Or they need to change Archives drastically to stop all this old design repetition.

Topps just needs to stop making 15 different baseball sets... each having like 10-20 different parallels.

@ThemightyOx:

I could not agree more!

Let's license as many companies as there are companies who want to make cards, but limit them to 2 complete sets per year - and no more than 2 series.

I wouldnt mind if Topps had a little more than 2. Maybe something like this.

Topps regular and update (I really prefered when the reg set was released all at once and then a "traded set at the end of the year)

Toppy Minor League. Whatever they want to call it. Heritage, pro debut etc

Topps Opening Day: The current opening day set makes no sense to me. Same pics as series one.. just different SPs and different inserts. Instead of that concept.. bring out a mid year set called opening day that features the players that appeared in the opening day lineups of all 30 clubs. Include cards for winning pitchers (if it wasnt the starter) and any big highlights. A nice 300 card set that makes sense

Topps Archives: A set of just players from the past but have a theme each year. Players of a certain decade or 2000 hit club/2000strikeout club  or something like that..

Topps Stickers. I loved these as a kid.. but please market them at a price point that can be attained by a kid.

This would give them something to release throughout the year without the saturation:
Feb - reg set
April - stickers
May - minors
June- opening day
July/Aug (around HOF induction time) Archives
Sept - Update

I like the card stock of Heritage better, but I like the design of Archives more.  I also agree there are too many sets and subsets and variations and parallels that it is so much to keep count of (luckily we have this site).

I agree that they should be limited to 2 or maybe 3 sets per company.  Topps could stick to a main set and an update set later in the year, then have an Archives set.  They should limit their subsets to 50 or less with a max of 5 per set.  While I like the minors cards, I would prefer if they just did that under the Bowman banner.  Its not like they are considered true rookie cards.

I wish they would go back to putting more emphasis on collecting the base set as opposed to getting all the variations and such.  I also wish the base set would have one card for one number (no more 2a, 2b, 2c and such).   It's a shame I started collecting just as the card industry started to stray from this concept (1991-1992)), though it wasn't near as bad as it is now.

And since I'm ranting, I wish that if Panini is going to sell cards under the Donruss umbrella and whatever other brand, they wouldn't putthe Panini logo on the cards too. That's just me though.
