Hi everyone, since I was a little busy with things over the next couple weekends (hopefully both weekends and not just this one*, see the end of the post for more details), and I turned off trading temporarily, I thought now would be a good time for a contest.
Here's how it will work:
Over the 10 days from 6/5-6/9 and picking up again the next week from 6/12-6/16, I will be opening up entries in the Giveaway Manager. I will post a link to the next day's entry the night before and entries will be accepted up until midnight in the last time zone (that means 7:00 AM EDT the following day).
The contest will be this - Each day will be a different random card from my collection of more than 150,000 cards (I tried the site's feature out before I decided to post about this, and it does pull randomly from any one of my 300+ collections). I will "describe" the card in as much detail as I want to. I can be VERY descriptive, or if it winds up being a more "iconic" card, I might be a little sketchy.
A not-so-random example:
This card has a purple banner below the picture of the player with the team name in it. To the left of the banner, a baseball contains the card company's "umbrella" logo. The player is holding a bat in both hands and is looking to his left (which is the right edge of the card as we're looking at it). The back has black ink and two different shades of green (the green dominates the back while the black frames the sections and the entire back. This card is #610 and has "Baseball Dates" on the back that talks about something that happened on May 9, 1888. The player was born in Dayton, Ohio.
Answer: 1979 Topps #610 - Mike Schmidt - Phillies
I will request that you leave either the year, company, set name, card number, player name, and team as I have done here or simply a link to the card and do so during the long day's window. Because I am using the Giveaway manager, timing within the day is not important. As I do with all my contests, you may change your answer, but only your LAST answer given within the time allotted will be counted.
The example will be included in the Giveaway manager's page each day. My collection is mostly baseball, but I do have a set of football cards, many hockey sets and PCs, and even some golf and non-sport stuff, so, we'll see where this leads. Day 1's is ready to go, and it was in fact baseball. I will post updates to this thread only with links to the next entry page. Feel free to ask any questions about the contest here, but please do not discuss potential answers here until after the window has closed.
I have yet to determine prizes (prizes will be cards). Anyone and everyone who has all 10 answers correct will receive a prize of multiple cards. If no one gets all ten, whoever has the highest amount (and ties) will receive multiple-card prizes. And there is incentive to play daily. One lucky participant who plays daily but misses answers will be selected randomly (prize wheel to be witnessed live by at least two other members) from all the participants who answer daily to receive a single-card prize (the single card will be a serial-numbered card). I look forward to seeing the guesses and to awarding prizes.
Thanks to all who participate.
* - This weekend (and hopefully next) is a local golf tournament that both my son and I will be participating in (separately). 6/3 is the qualifying round (play 18 holes of stroke play, top 16 players go in the "championship" flight, the rest are divided into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd flights). First round of the match play is on 6/4. Only if the round is won, do we get to move on to the next rounds (6/10 and 6/11). Last year, my son had a bye for the first round in his flight, and the person I was supposed to play in my flight couldn't make it (didn't find out until after we got there and was warming up). We both won our second round matches but lost our finals matches (we both still got nice prizes for coming in second in our respective flights). Due to the time this will take over the weekends, and the subsequent shifting of other weekend activities (as well and moving some activities into the week itself), I won't have a lot of free time until the week of 6/12 - hence the turning off of trades and no contest entries over the weekend), but I will have the ability to send out prizes once the contest has ended the following weekend.
