Mark,
I think most stores, even ones I like, are more interested in modern cards.
I posted this back in May on a Card Shop thread.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend 1,000,000 Baseball Cards - Manchester Missouri- a "suburb" of St. Louis.
I've probably spent at least $1000+ there over the years but grew frustrated at the Owner's refusal to be flexible with prices. (His store, his right. I freely accept that.) Everything is priced top dollar and then there's a 10% sales tax on top of the price. Admittedly I haven't purchased much of anything there for 3, maybe 4 years. His standard response when I asked for a few dollars off was "Nope, I can get that price on eBay."
I go in the store twice a year. I was there last Saturday to get my free pack of cards and I go in with my buddy when he visits for the weekend. I have picked up a few Cardinal commons, "junk wax era" cards instead of buying them on SportLots, but even those were priced at 50 cents or 3 for a dollar.
I'd recommend you come into town this weekend for the show at the Machinist Hall. Lots of dealers and lots of opportunities to find cards. If you're at the show, look for me. I'll be wearing my Royals cap. I don't recall seeing anyone else ever at a show wearing one.
Of course, everything seems overpriced to me right now but I'm just an old guy sitting on my porch yelling at the kids to stay off my lawn. 😀
