so I used the ebay generator but the link didn't work. how come

That's happened to me too.  Just cutting & pasting the "eBay Link Generator" output won't make it a hyperlink.  If you click on the little chainlink "Link" button (top row, 9th from left) in the toolbox above where you're posting your message, you can then paste the generated link into the Link's link-generator & that will make it a blue, underlined, hyperlink.  It's as easy as 1-2-3... 4... 5... :)
