Random Card of the Day

Year: 1998-99

Set: UD Choice (Rate)

Card: #169 Tim Hardaway

“ UD Choice, formerly known as as Collector's Choice in previous seasons, was one of many sets that had series two cancelled by the lockout that year. The set would be renamed MVP the following season, and never had a series two again. Being that this is a Nets game, there's about an 85% chance I watched this game during the 1998-98 season. There's no way to know if I did, though. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ One of my favorite basketball players as a kid with the Warriors. I quit watching much basketball around this time so I had completely forgotten he was with the Heat. As for the card, there is too much blank space above his head and on the back the photo looks smushed. Apart from those minor complaints I would give it a 10, as it is a 9.5. ” -davidhandberry

“ Looks like a Hot Wheels symbol. Nice picture on the front. ” -cjjt

“ I like Upper Deck products but Choice was not high on the list. At least for this set it doesn't say "Collector's Choice" when it never was the collector's choice. Flash Stats? Oh OK the stats on the back for this card are the player's "3 steal games" from the season. What a way to stretch out the set make a card for each stat of the year. Front design OK at least the team name is mentioned and the player name is larger than team name. Missing his position though. Brand logo and "Flash Stats" logo are a bit big. Back looks like an attempt at doing the Partridge Family bus design using Red and Yellow and black with some gray. Meh. ” -captkirk42

“ The back of this card is simply atrocious. No sir. I don't like it. ” -CollectingAfterDeath

“ I don't remember this set at all, and I was collecting at the time. I like it. ” -switzr1

“ If you find a magnifying glass somewhere, you'll see the team name and his position in the lower left of the card. Don't be confused and think you missed the 1998-99 inaugural season of the Fargo Flash Stats or something. ” -kents_stuff

“ A nice picture. Cool card! ” -muskie027

My comment should have stated 1997-98 season, not 1998-98.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

I really liked UD Choice in 1998 MLB/NFL and 1998-99 NBA. It was a nice change from Collector's Choice. When it suddenly changed to UD MVP for the 1999 and 1999-00 releases, I wasn't interested at all anymore. UD had a good brand starting there, but I guess they didn't agree (or maybe collectors didn't show agreement at the time). The continuous changes led to its demise no matter what the brand was called. Plus they added Victory and Ultimate Victory to further muddy the waters. Keep diluting it and no one cares anymore. UD Choice had a fresh look versus what every other set looked like at that time. And it was very affordable then too. After MVP, Victory became the cheap set and then Vintage. It's pretty bad when your "cheap" set isn't the flagship and you still can't make it work!

The UD Choice base cards also had a trivia question that the answer was only available online. Was that the first time a card directed you to visit a website? I would need to do a little research on that.

This card, being a subset, does not have that.

This was also (maybe) the 1st UD set without the hologram logo on the back. The UD Choice base cards had no UD Hologram on them! They mostly had a printed "pretend-hologram". It was a ghosted UD diamond-logo printed on the backs. The holofoil hologram was not on the cards! Look at the back scan for this card again. No hologram! I have one NFL card that doesn't even have the logo in the hologram location.

Opps I stated on my previous comment the player position was not on the front. IT IS right next to the team Name, but then again the print for the team and player position, even the player's name is kind of small.

Look at Timmy's guns! I would think a "Flash Stats" insert would have some stats slapped on the front in some comic book font.

The Choice Reserve parallels had holograms.
