Year: 1990

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #763 Denny Martinez

“ I remember over on Beckett the boards, about 5 years ago, had a contest to determine the worst Topps design by decade. This one. A few years ago the contest was revived for the best design by decade, this one won. I guess its a design you either love or absolutely hate. ” -rmpaq5

“ Smell that cardboard. SOOOOO GOOD!!! ” -carthage44

“ My favorite baseball set design ever. Seriously! ” -Billy Kingsley

“ El Presidente! Interesting how Topps chooses the first name to display. In this case Denny vs. Dennis. I know people are critical of calling Clemente, Bob instead of Roberto on some cards. Collecting cards as a youngster in Knoxville, my first introduction to Latino names was on baseball cards. ” -joshthurman

“ Many people hate this set I guess because its so basic? I like it. Pretty much one of the few early 1990s sets that I never really hated. ” -captkirk42

“ Too colorful a design. Ranks with 1972 set. ” -cjjt

One of many players with a long but unusual career.

I missed this post.  I love the 1990 Topps set.  You'll have to get the Debut and Traded sets to go along with the base set as well as the Glossy Send-ins, All-Stars, and Rookies, insert sets.  There's also a 6-card leaders promo set with blank banks that goes along well with this set.  1990 Topps was a sharp contrast coming off of the '87, '88, and '89 releases, which may help to explain it's initial turn-off, but so were the '51, '60, '72, '75, and '81 sets.  This is a colorful set that may have shocked a lot of collectors at first, but far outshines its competitors for the same year (Donruss, Fleer, Score).  Unfortunately, a lot of people were already tricked into collecting Upper Deck after the success of it's inaugural '89 set with its holograms and all.  Little did anyone know that Upper Deck would continue to release the same set design year after year.  If you haven't looked at the 1990 Topps set in a while, I'd suggest taking another look.  This one is a sure classic.

Love the Topps cardboard, and really miss those old Expo uniforms.

Agree, I thought these were just hideous.  The border looked like something whipped up on a dot matrix printer, the block team names were in nonsensical colors (teams like the Tigers, Giants, and Phillies were an ugly green color), and the backs utilized an ugly font and color.  The football and hockey designs were far superior.  Topps is fortunate that the Bowman and Donruss 1990 cards were even uglier. Especially disappointing after the excellent '89 design.

The card in the scan is horribly off-center to boot.

Always liked this set. Especially when compared to the other 1990 sets. I think this was the first set I completed from packs.

1990 baseball sets design:

Donruss and Topps are about equal in gaudiness and quality

Fleer was terrible, and the quality control on the cards was terrible as well

Score and Upper Deck put out quality products, with UD edging out Score just a hair

On a scale from 1-10, with 10 being a great set and a 1 dbeing a complete dud, here are my scores:

  • Donruss - 3
  • Fleer - 1
  • Score - 7.5
  • Topps - 3
  • Upper Deck - 8

Not a great year, but at least there were 2 solid products.

Leaf had the best looking set in 1990, UD was OK, and I kind of like the Bowman just a little bit. Everything else was quite gaudy.
