Trivia

  • The puzzle on the sticker backs measures 5 horizontal cards high by 6 cards wide for a total of 30 pieces. It depicts the Seattle SuperSonics playing the Washington Bullets for the 1979 NBA championship.
  • All 22 teams have 6 different puzzle back variations. Eight teams have 2 blue, 2 red, and 2 yellow fronts (Hawks, Celtics, Bulls, Cavaliers, Pistons, Rockets, Bucks, and Nets). The Warriors have 6 yellow fronts. The 13 remaining teams have 6 white fronts. A complete "master" set would have 132 different stickers.
  • The 30-piece puzzle celebrating Seattle's 1979 NBA championship is actually a picture of a Warriors/Bullets game as noted in the lower right corner.

I recently put together this set and had a lot of trouble finding information. So here are some notes if you are trying to do it.

Distributed six per pack. Eight teams have variations with a blue background, a red background and a yellow background. Sticker backs form a 30-piece "1979 NBA Champions" SuperSonics/Bullets puzzle (which is actually a picture of a random Warriors/Bullets game).

FRONTS (38): Fourteen teams have a single white sticker. Eight teams have 3 stickers instead of 1 (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, New Jersey) each colored red/yellow/blue. So total 22 teams + (8 x 2 extra) = 38 fronts.

BACKS (30): There are 30 pieces of the puzzle, 5 horizontal rows (1-5) x 6 vertical columns (A-F) = 30 backs.

SET (132): Each of the 22 teams has 6 different backs. A complete master set would then have 22 x 6 = 132 cards. In order for the cards to fit onto a single printed sheet of 132 cards, one of the puzzle rows needed to be printed more than the others, essentially creating a double print situation for the bottom row of the puzzle.

Row 1 (4 teams) Kansas City, New York, San Antonio, Washington
Row 2 (4 teams) Detroit, Golden State, Milwaukee, Utah
Row 3 (4 teams) Chicago, Cleveland, San Diego, Seattle
Row 4 (4 teams) Atlanta, Boston, Indiana, Philadelphia
Row 5 (6 teams) Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Phoenix, Portland

The backs of the stickers (insert set) complete a puzzle in 30 pieces. There are variations where the same fronts of the stickers will have different back puzzle pieces. While not numbered, I have designated them by row (numbers 1 thru 5) and columns (letters A thru F), starting in the upper left corner. Thus the upper left corner puzzle piece will be designated A1, while the lower right corner will be F5.

The puzzle grid is laid out in this fashion:
A1 B1 C1 D1 E1 F1
A2 B2 C2 D2 E2 F2
A3 B3 C3 D3 E3 F3
A4 B4 C4 D4 E4 F4
A5 B5 C5 D5 E5 F5
Upper left corner is A1, lower left corner is A5, upper right corner is F1 and lower right corner is F5.
