Trivia |
- 2nd and final set to include Seattle Pilots cards even though team had already moved to Milwaukee to become the Brewers.
- Wax packs were $0.10 for 10 cards. This was the first year that $0.05 wax packs were made unavailable since Topps made them available in 1952. Penny packs stopped after 1965.
- Cello packs were $0.25 for 33 cards.
- Rack packs were $0.39 for 54 cards.
- The set was released in seven series. Series 6 is #547-633. Series 7 is #634-720.
- The first series lacked the white bar between player name and position that subsequent series had (space permitting).
- #1 World Champions - UER: No "TOPPS" in card-number circle
- #18 Carlos May - Carlos May was named to the 1969 Topps All-Star Rookie Team but his #18 card is missing the trophy designation.

My mom gave me my first baseball cards - 1970 Topps Baseball Series 1 wax pack - and I've been hooked ever since. I know Tom Egan was in that first pack. I was a big Tigers fan at the time, and if Jim Price and Gates Brown weren't in that first pack, they followed soon after. I can still recall the smell of the bubble gum and the feel of the powder from the gum on my fingers. I believe the posters were inserted into Series 1 packs, but unfortunately, I can't remember which poster I pulled with that pack.

Topps 1970 baseball are the first packs I remember opening. We would go to the market with my mom and were rewarded with a wax pack if we behaved during her shopping. For some reason, the Amos Otis card is the first one I recall seeing.
This set got me started collecting baseball cards. After each Little League game, my mother would give me a dollar to spend at the snack bar. I remember getting the biggest thrill opening a pack and getting a Tommy Harper card. Living in Washington State my dad had taken the family to two or three Pilot games that summer. My brother and I must have had the entire set. After we moved out a few years later, my mom sold all of our cards when we didn't take them with us. Good times. Rating: 9
