Hedley Smith was the Goalie for the 1923-24 Owen Sound Greys Dominion of Canada Memorial Cup Champions. Hedley choose not to leave Owen Sound to pursue professional hockey unlike many of his Greys teammates who went on to the NHL including Melville "Butch" Keeling, Ralph "Cooney" Weiland, Teddy "Work" Graham, and Fred "Frecky" Elliott all from 1923-24, Roy Burmeister, and Patsy Callighan from 1924-25, and Benny Grant, Jack Markle, and Martin Lauder from the 1926-27 Owen Sound Greys team that won a second Canadian Championship. As a result Hedley Smith became the first player to ever win two Memorial Cups, which remains to this day a very small and exclusive group of players. |
