1991 Topps Desert Storm

Notes

A Complete set of 1991 Topps Desert Storm consists of 264 sequentially numbered cards and includes a sticker insert set consisting of 44 stickers. The set was released in three separate series consisting of 88 cards each. Topps gave each series its own subtitle.

Series 1 (Coalition for Peace) consists of 88 cards (#1 - #88) and a 22 sticker insert set (#1 - #22). Stickers were inserted at rate of 1 sticker per retail pack of 8 cards. When combined, the backs of stickers #7 - #11 and #18 - #22 form “Puzzle A” which has a blue border and depicts an image of a pilot. Sticker #1 shows a sample image of the completed puzzle. Stickers #2 - #6 and #13 - #17 form “Puzzle B” which has a red border and forms an image of a Navy ship when combined. Card#11 shows a sample image of the completed puzzle.

Series 1 was produced in 6 separate print runs which created numerous variations. The most significant variation is the difference in the ink color used for the text “Desert Storm” in the logo on the card front. Print runs 1 and 2 used brown text while the 3rd and subsequent print runs used yellow text. The 4th print run corrected several errors that occurred in the first 3 print runs (card #’s 7, 33, 55, 58, 63, 73, and 88).

Series 1 cards were also used to produced “Glossy” sets. Two “Glossy” sets were distributed in US markets, one in the UK, and an additional set was distributed in Australia.

The two Glossy sets distributed in the US were packaged under the title “Deluxe Collectors’ Edition”. The two sets were printed during the 5th and 6th print runs respectively. They were printed on white card stock and have a glossy front and matte white back. The “Desert Storm” lettering on the card front is yellow. The first of the two sets was packaged as a complete set in a blue box that contained all 88 cards and 22 stickers. The second “Deluxe Collector’s Edition” set was packaged as a complete set in a red, white, and blue box. In this set the 22 sticker inserts were printed as regular cards and were included in the base set. Instead of being numbered 1-22 like the sticker inserts, these cards are numbered A1 – A22.

The Glossy set distributed in the UK uses the same 88-card base set checklist and images as the US version. The cards have a glossy front and an off-white card back. The “Desert Storm” lettering on the card front is brown. The checklist and images for the sticker insert set differs from the US version and the stickers are also smaller; measuring 2 ¼” x 3”.

The Glossy set distributed in Australia uses the same base set and sticker insert checklist and images as the US set. The only difference between the sets is the cardstock. The Australian version is printed on thinner card stock than the US and UK versions. The fronts are glossy and the backs are matte white.

Series 2 (Victory Series) consists of 88 cards (#89 - #176) and an 11 sticker insert set (#23 - #33). Stickers were inserted at rate of 1 sticker per retail pack of 8 cards.
