11. 1982 TCMA Cedar Rapids Reds #21 Paul O'Neill
O'Neill was drafted by the Reds in the fourth round of the 1981 Major League Baseball draft. Played for the Cedar Rapids Reds in the 1982 Season.
|
12. 1987 Nashville Sounds #19 Chris Sabo
Cedar Rapids Reds 1983. Sabo spent five seasons in the Reds' minor league system, during which he never put up impressive numbers, although in two of those seasons he was named the Most Valuable Player of his team. By 1988, he was given little chance of making the big-league team out of spring training, but his ability combined with his grit and hustle was reminiscent of, and endeared him to, Reds manager Pete Rose. And with Buddy Bell starting the season on the disabled list and the Reds needing a third baseman, Sabo stepped in and was the opening day starter.
|
13. 1991 Classic Best Cedar Rapids Reds #6 Trevor Hoffman
Trevor entered the Minor Leagues as a Short Stop and a Third Baseman. After not having much success as a hitter, Trevor tried his hand at Pitching. In 1991-1992 Hoffman threw 95 miles per hour (153 km/h) and recorded a 2.90 ERA with 169 strikeouts in 142 2⁄3 minor league innings over two seasons while alternating between relieving and starting at Single-A Cedar Rapids, Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Nashville.
|
14. 2000 Multi-Ad Cedar Rapids Kernels #13 John Lackey
In 2000, Lackey split his time between the Single-A Cedar Rapids Kernels, High-A Lake Elsinore Storm, and Double-A Erie SeaWolves. Because of his quick ascent up the minor league ladder, he was named the Angels' Minor League Pitcher of the Year,[3] posting a combined 15–9 record with a 3.15 ERA. John was called up to California Angels in 2002.
|
15. 2010 Perfect Game Cedar Rapids Kernels #25 Mike Trout
Was a member of the 2009 & 2010 Cedar Rapids Kernels, California Angels affiliates team. His Krypton name is Kal-El, or also know as SuperMan!
|
16. 2014 Bowman #189 Joe Mauer
August 3, 2014 Kernels fans were treated to an appearance by Joe Mauer. Already established in his Major League career, the 31-year-old is considered one of the greatest Minnesota Twins of all time. He’s was in Cedar Rapids rehabbing an oblique muscle injury that has kept him on the disabled list since early July of 2014. Joe played in 4 games with 15 at bats with the Kernels before returning to the Twins.

Love lists like this. My cousin came up through the Reds organization, playing in Cedar Rapids in 1984 and 1985 with the likes of Kurt Stillwell and Rob Dibble.
Thank you, this is a work in progress. I will be adding more players and making adjustments to the Bio's for consistency. I went to games my whole life. I was 8 or 9 years old in 84-95, that's about when I began paying attention to who the players were.

I've never known... why is it the City of Five Seasons? I know they have an arena with Five Seasons in the name. Never knew why.
It's a darn shame that the photographer decided not to wait until Eric Davis opened his eyes to take the photo! This is a good idea for a list and may do one for my favorite minor league teams
If you ask a local who's lived in Cedar Rapids along time, they most likely will give you an answer that explains a fifth season. Some will talk about how we sometimes get some cool rainy fall like weather in early September, then a week or two of warmer hot weather like a second Summer. Others may try to explain how we often have warmer spring like weather at the end of February and then one last snow storm in March. Some will joke that its really the city of five smells. Each of our factories produce a distinct smell, Quaker Oats, General Mills, Cargil, ADM (corn sweetner), and the fifth smell comming from the meat packing plant on inceneration day in the 60-80's or in the 90's the city land fill. The truth is that in the late 1960's local advertising agencies were giving an intiative to create a marketing plan to promote the city. One advertising agency felt the city should captalize on the fact that the layout of the city and its major highways allowed for quicker commute times than that of other large cities around the county, thereby providing time for more enjoyable lifestyle. The City oF Five Seasons was based on a Bible verse from Ecclesiastes 3:1 - "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." The new logo and branding line were accompanied by this explination. Life is the sum of all seasons with witch it is filled, And if we have time to enjoy the things most important to us, life is rich indeed. In Cedar Rapids there is time enough... time to enjoy the seasons as they pass. Extra time. Precious time. A fifth season.
These guys were all chillin' in Cedar Rapids for a bit.
Sorry, I'll see myself out. |
