March 2018 Non-sport Acquisitions

3/31 update: I closed out March pretty strong. I am way over budget for the month but I allowed myself a little extra because my wife and I went on a road trip to Devils Tower in Wyoming and we stopped at every antique store along the way.

3/17 update: This has been a month of coffee cards. I think that's all that I've bought this month. My wife and I did some antique hunting near Rochester, MN today. She found a lot of vintage books. I only found four trade cards...all coffee cards.

This is will be my third month of actively buying vintage non-sport. I'm finding that I am drawn towards trade cards more than tobacco issues. They are generally a little cheaper and the subject matter is a little broader.

This set is not really my thing. I purchased it because it was the first trade card I saw at the end of a long day of antiquing. They might grow on me...or they end up in trade.

Just looking at them sleep on the floor makes my hips hurt. Maybe it's too many nights sleeping on the ground while I was in the Army.

I appreciate my pillow top mattress.

The last of my March 17th purchases and my first 19th Century actress card. I've uploaded so many actors and actress checklists and did so many PID associations of them that I actually knew who she was when I saw this card.

This card has some surface loss (looks worse in the scan), but I think I'll keep it. If nothing else, it makes all the work doing PID associations worthwhile.

I've been looking for an example from this series for a couple months now. I found this one going through a box of postcards at an antique store.

I think I let out a small yelp of excitement when I found it. For $2 I don't even mind that its missing a little piece of the corner.

This is an interesting series. The back of the card actually contains recipes using the subject on the front. Purchased this one for $2 at the Old Rooster Antique store in Rochester, MN.

I'm a huge fan of Arbuckle's Coffee cards. They have several series that have great artwork and interesting write-ups on the back. I wish this card was in better shape, but for $1 I'm not complaining. I hope I look as good when I'm 125 years old.

Purchased in Stewartville, MN.

Another Arbuckle's card from the same antique store in Stewartville. I won't intentionally try and complete all of the Arbuckle's sets, but I would like at least an example of each in my collection.

Yeah, I don't get the joke on the Arbuckle card either. But the Columbus cards are beauties. Especially the Salamanca one. Nice pick-ups.

I'm also not finding the satire card very funny. Maybe they were more easily amused back then? I like the back much better- I enjoy seeing old buildings, which probably weren't that old back then!

I like the musician card, mainly because of the unusual stringed instrument she is playing.

I'm also really liking the Columbus cards. I'm still trying to figure out where my interest lies in regards to 19th tobacco and trade cards, but this Columbus series is on my short-list of sets to complete.
