The Merkle's Boner Galleryby Vvvergeer - 12 cards (Last updated on Jul 8, 2022) |
9/14/17. IT IS DONE! Don't quite know when I started this, two or three years ago, I'd say. But I've done it. This is my collection of every player who was on the field during Merkle's Boner.
I leave the rest of my original description of this list below:
I've always loved it, but for about three years now -- ever since I decided I needed at least one tobacco card, a Cub -- I've been a bit obsessed with Merkle's Boner. Perhaps I just like the name. Perhaps I like that it led to the last Cubs World Series win before 2016. I dunno. I'm just going with it.
I'm not going to recount the story here. I'll leave it to those who are interested to look up. Suffice it to say, Merkle made a pretty understandable base running error that arguably won the Cubs the 1908 pennant. He never lived it down.
I thought I'd be done once I got Merkle and Tinker and Evers and Chance. But then I wondered what other tobacco cards I could shoot for, and it occurred to me that there was a pitcher that day. And another guy on base. And a guy who got the hit. There's the guy who fielded the ball. And, less connected to the play, but of course on the field, were the catcher, third baseman, and two other outfielders.
I lean towards T205s whenever possible, because they have stats and are beautiful. I hope to own all of these someday. It'll take awhile. But here's my Merkle's Boner gallery. Enjoy.
V3
1. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Fred Merkle
The man, himself. Made an understandable and small error and was ridiculed for the rest of his life. Went on to an excellent career with the Giants, and eventually, the Cubs.
|
2. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Al Bridwell
Got what would have been the game winning hit for the Giants that day.
|
3. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Moose McCormick
Scored what would have been the winning run that day for Giants.
|
4. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Jack Pfiester
The pitcher for the Cubs. Merkle saved him the loss. Guy had a 2.02 career ERA. Nicknamed "the Giant Killer' because he crushed the New York Giants.
|
5. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Johnny Kling
Ah, "Noisy" Johnny Kling. Once had 12 consecutive hits and became a world champion pool player.
|
6. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Frank Chance
First baseman and manager. The last manager of the Cubs to win a World Series. Here's hoping Joe Maddon takes that title from him soon.
|
7. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Joe Tinker
The shortstop that day. A homer and two errors. And of course two double plays turned.
|
8. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Frank Schulte
Left field. The first MVP ever! Was really happy to have a T207 Schulte in this collection, but then decided to work on another display of all T207 Cubs Team. So I replaced it with this T205. SGC 30/2. $24.00. Very pleased. The first player for whom I have two tobacco cards. Wouldn't have guessed that.... |
9. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Johnny Evers
The second baseman. The one who started it all. Knew the rule. Complained to the very same ump a few weeks before about the same rule. Frantically called for the ball -- any ball -- to tag second base.
|
10. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Harry Steinfeldt
Third base. 1906 leader in hits and RBI, and took second in the batting race. Just sort of "accidentally" won this card on eBay on December 5, 2016. Was leaning toward getting a T205, but bid on this and won when it was about $10 cheaper than I expected. My bad, I didn't notice the (MK) on the graded card. Not upset, though. Someone wrote numbers on the back of the card, but I don't care at all about the backs of T205s. Perhaps someday I'll replace it. But now I've got 8 of 12 cards in this list. |

I like it! Also, the more you talk about them, the more I like the T205s. Poor, poor Merkle.

One of the most interesting galleries I've seen on this site. Thank you for sharing your experiences on acquiring each card.
Fantastic. Thank you! | ||
Congrats on completing this. Aren't you glad Big Six wasn't the other baserunner?!?!
Not sure. If he had been, I might be compelled to buy one of his cards, despite the absurd cost. And then....I'd have one!
WOW! Very nice! | ||
I love this gallery. Cubs...Tobacco and Carmel cards... a classic baseball story... What more could you ask for? I'm a sucker for a collection that reflects some aspect of history. I have some of the T205 and T206 Cubs, but the card I always wanted was the Triple folder T202 J.Tinker/F.Chance (Evers makes a safe slide). Maybe some day. A friend has one so I can always visit it if I want. |
