The Merkle's Boner Gallery

by Vvvergeer - 12 cards (Last updated on Jul 8, 2022)

1. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Fred Merkle

The man, himself. Made an understandable and small error and was ridiculed for the rest of his life. Went on to an excellent career with the Giants, and eventually, the Cubs.

Ungraded, but pretty decent card. Probably about a 2. I now have two other Merkles from the era. One more, and I'll make another display.

2. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Al Bridwell

Got what would have been the game winning hit for the Giants that day.

September 12, 2016, this card arrived. PSA 2. Perfect to me. I just love the big sweater. Halfway to having all 12 players who were on the field for Merkle's Boner. Then I have the design to create an awesome display case....

3. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Moose McCormick

Scored what would have been the winning run that day for Giants.

Tough to find in the right condition at the right price, but picked it up with my April 2016 birthday money.

Just two more to go..

4. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Jack Pfiester

The pitcher for the Cubs. Merkle saved him the loss. Guy had a 2.02 career ERA. Nicknamed "the Giant Killer' because he crushed the New York Giants.

Picked up in July 2016. Decided that, over the internet at least, I need to buy only graded because there're just too many fakes out there. So this is an SGC 30/2. It's my first T206 card. Sure, I love it, because of the art and the age, but I still prefer the T205s because of the stats on the back. Though the T206s have better poses.

5. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Johnny Kling

Ah, "Noisy" Johnny Kling. Once had 12 consecutive hits and became a world champion pool player.

Have a beautiful PSA 2.

6. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Frank Chance

First baseman and manager. The last manager of the Cubs to win a World Series. Here's hoping Joe Maddon takes that title from him soon.

This was the first tobacco card I ever bought. Again, ungraded and probably about a 2.5. That's all I need. The tobacco cards are SUPPOSED to look a little beat up.

7. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Joe Tinker

The shortstop that day. A homer and two errors. And of course two double plays turned.

I've got a reasonable ungraded version of this. About a 1.5, I'd guess.

8. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Frank Schulte

Left field. The first MVP ever! Was really happy to have a T207 Schulte in this collection, but then decided to work on another display of all T207 Cubs Team. So I replaced it with this T205. SGC 30/2. $24.00. Very pleased. The first player for whom I have two tobacco cards. Wouldn't have guessed that....

9. 1911 T205 Gold Border #NNO Johnny Evers

The second baseman. The one who started it all. Knew the rule. Complained to the very same ump a few weeks before about the same rule. Frantically called for the ball -- any ball -- to tag second base.

SGC 35/2.5. Awesome card.

10. 1909-11 American Tobacco Company T206 White Border #NNO Harry Steinfeldt

Third base. 1906 leader in hits and RBI, and took second in the batting race. Just sort of "accidentally" won this card on eBay on December 5, 2016. Was leaning toward getting a T205, but bid on this and won when it was about $10 cheaper than I expected. My bad, I didn't notice the (MK) on the graded card. Not upset, though. Someone wrote numbers on the back of the card, but I don't care at all about the backs of T205s. Perhaps someday I'll replace it. But now I've got 8 of 12 cards in this list.

I like it! Also, the more you talk about them, the more I like the T205s. Poor, poor Merkle.

One of the most interesting galleries I've seen on this site. Thank you for sharing your experiences on acquiring each card.

Congrats on completing this. Aren't you glad Big Six wasn't the other baserunner?!?!

Not sure. If he had been, I might be compelled to buy one of his cards, despite the absurd cost. And then....I'd have one!

I love this gallery. Cubs...Tobacco and Carmel cards... a classic baseball story... What more could you ask for? I'm a sucker for a collection that reflects some aspect of history. I have some of the T205 and T206 Cubs, but the card I always wanted was the Triple folder T202 J.Tinker/F.Chance (Evers makes a safe slide). Maybe some day. A friend has one so I can always visit it if I want.
