1989 O-Pee-Chee Stickers Baseball Forum

this really does not affect me, or my collection at all, but I was thinking from the perspective of of a player collector or team collector with this scenario-

looking at ozzie smith- in this set he has two different sticker fronts, with no back variations.

but looking from the backs perspective only, how would I collect ozzie smith backs, and ensure I chase down all the various front variations?

I think we are covered there since I looked at the ozzie listings for this set, and it shows 3 backs with different fronts, and the back with blank front from the insert set.

so if I only have ozzie in hand or in binder, in cataloging the fronts, I will have covered all the backs (known) as well.

We are in the process of adding the missing versions (as they are reported, when they are reported, as they aren't all fully known or catalogued anywhere else), and then we are linking the names (and teams) for both stickers (fronts) and card backs. This is a manual process that takes time.

I put my 2 cent worth in when they started this.    I understand how and why they did it as is.

As a player collecter it may cause me a lttle problem.  I'm can to work around it.  Excample:

Roger Craig   (football)  has 2 fronts   but is the back on 9  cards..    I have all of them.  Issue:  If he is on any more backs how do I find them?    If I look under the year 1988 Roger Craig all I see is the 2 fronts and  the Super star back with a blank back.   If I go to the set it just show the players on the front.  you have to click on each card to see who is on the back.   I have 4 players in this set.   As it stands now I'm only missing 3 cards. out of 31 Var. not counting the 2 Super Star backs.  There may be others that I do not know about.

budler - remember - the product is STICKERS, not the backs.

The fronts you are calling are REALLY the backs (minus the stickers).

We are cataloguing based on the STICKERS and the differing backs become the variations.

When you shift your way of thinking, see if this is now consistent with what is here and what you own.

Maybe I do not word it right.

That is the way I have looked at it and how I have it in my excel files. (stickers and sticker backs for me not VAR).   What I called the fronts was the stickers.  67/251a   67/251b   The 9 others were the backs or VAR by the site.    As far as the Super Star Back set.   it appears that I will have to get one and remove the stickers to match the  site.  No problem with that.

My issue is how to find the VAR cards that I need.  Find one that is missing and will do an IR for it.

If I'm understanding you, there are 2 things here.

1 - Why do you need to remove the stickers to match the site? I don't get this. The "insert" set of backs is simply a record of what backs there are. If you have the back on another sticker, you have the back. You don't need to remove the stickers to have the back.

2 - That's a problem we all face (those who wish to collect the variations). We DON'T know what's out there - yet. That's why we're taking any additions seriously (at least some of us are), and are trying to fully document all the various sticker/back combinations. If you know of one that isn't listed here, please IR it.
