1998-99 Topps Hockey Forum

I was just going through sets of hockey cards and when I went through 1998-99 topps hockey i found 5 cards with no front on them. The backs of these cards are Dallas star Mike Modano, Colorado avalanche Peter forsberg , Vancouver Canucks Pavel Bure ,Buffalo Sabres Dominik Hasek and Phoenix Coyotes Keith Tkachuk. The Modano and the Hasek are supposed to be refractors. Does anyone know anything about these cards.

Sounds like you have Mystery Finest cards. You can peel off the black film on the front, which hides which player you got (it would be one of the ones on the front). To catalog them here after peeling them you'd need to figure out which Refractor/non-Refractor versions you have (Bronze/Silver/Gold). You can find those inserts here.

On the backs there are 3 different photos of the player. If your card is a Bronze the front image will look like the picture on the left only much larger, Silver version will be the middle picture, and if you get lucky and have a Gold MF it will be the far right pic of the back only larger and on the front of the card. Not sure if this will work, but try shining like a 100-watt bulb on the front of the card (NOT TOO CLOSE!) to see the image under the black goop and thus know what your going to get unlike Forrest Gump and his box of chocolates.

The above members pretty much summed it up. You should be able to carefully lift up one of the corners to peel the black layer off, revealing the card front. If you decide to "unwrap" them, let us know what you find!

I was puzzled by the one I had for a real long time, thought it was some kind of misprint. It ended up being the gold version Saku Koivu. A fun, but weird, gimmick...
