I disagree with the decision to consider the 1976 Topps Traded inserts as base cards. According to Topp’s official 2020 Archives Checklist, these are insert cards, and are NOT part of the base set. If the AU and color variants are considered inserts, then why wouldn’t the base insert not be considered as such?
Now granted Topp’s own checklist, while identifying them as an insert category, mis-numbered the cards. These cards are all numbered 76TT-XXX vs. just XXX. [Of note, the actual 1976 Topps Traded Set was considered as an insert set to the 1976 Topps Baseball Set.]

I have not been able to find this in the change log to see how this was decided and by whom.

The very first entry shows who created the set and uploaded the checklist. And then looking at all the edits this checklist was done all wrong. There are VAR Note1 entries but when a different person entered the Note2 they didn't use VAR: so the DB doesn't regsiter it yet. Also, the VARs should be SP, VAR. But to the direct point I can see where the confusion lies for the Traded set. The numbering makes it deceiving as it's a continuation of the base set, but all signs point to it being issued as an insert set to include the sell sheet itself. I can do some of the edits for the VARs before I start work, but the Traded needs a set created, checklist created and the data moved over it looks.
Yep, another case of someone rushing so they can get points instead of doing it right. Long slog on the manual edits....

Are they staying in the Base Checklist? If not my next question would be if that part is changed and an Insert Checklist created would mine Auto Transfer to that Checklist. I think I'm understanding that they will remain in Base.

They're numbered as base, despite a prefix. Admin approved it. I would guess they are staying.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I'm guessing that the base set VARs are a work in progress? I see that not all are listed as to what they are.

Looks that way. I actually went to Walmart last night and bought a blaster, and noticed the same thing. I just used the code on the back to determine that I got no SP VARs, though I did get a hi number SP of Duke Snider.
The jumbo cards are awesome, for the record.

The blaster I bought @ a Wal-Mart in Baltimore produced an SP of Ernie Banks (into the collection it went) , a jumbo of Thurman Munson and an auto redemption for Dante Bichette.
