I have a 2020 Donruss Signature Series Jake Frey autograph and I had it sitting next to my Topps Gypsy Queen Jake Farley RC and noticed they are exactly the same picture with the Donruss having the team name and logo removed. Is it common for competing companies to use the same photos?

Yeah I see what you mean. Many of the off brand and Topps ones may actually be Topps ones made for the other companies but like the Fleer and Upper Deck and the Topps and Donruss are the weird ones as they are direct competition.

I wonder if the companies even have their own photographers on staff, though. It's probably easier and cheaper for them to buy photos from freelance photographers, and I guess it's certainly possible that they'd buy the same photo.

Well, Topps uses Getty Images as their source for images. I can't speak for Panini, but they may well have used Getty also and just happened to use the same one. ThoughI am tempted to use "happened" instead.

Even more fun when it happens within the same year (this is 1982):

I brought this one up before and didn't recall seeing it in the Cigars list above, but here are Barry Sanders 1993 Pro Line Portraits and 1995 Upper Deck Special Edition:

Yeah those are definitely different pictures from the same day probably. The cloud formation is different and the shoe laces and feet are in different positions. Small details but easy to identify.
