I always complete Topps series 1, 2, & Update. I buy a Hobby jumbo box and a Wal Mart blaster box and that almost always completes it for me. It would be easier to wait for the factory set, but I love ripping packs, organizing my cards, and having some extras to trade.

I get a factory set at Christmas each year and then I buy a hand-collated Update set from a reliable seller on eBay. All for under $100. I get the 'busting packs' argument, and I def buy a few packs of each release at the time so I can get that thrill. But in terms of economics, there is no way I can continue to collect these sets and have any leftover dough to pursue my other collecting passions.
I'll say this for the factory set path, since so many are down on it: You still get to crack open the box and sort through every card in the whole set and organize them numerically and put the cards in a binder. It's a fun and relaxing process I look forward to each year. Plus, the factory set gives you the bonus five-card rookie variation pack (which I love!) as well as other perks (depending on which factory set variation you choose). If you don't want a million dupes and dont' care about the inserts of autos or patches, this is the way to go IMO.

Best crop of rookies I've seen in a series 1 in some time, too. Pretty excited for it.
Going to go the Jumbo box route. Will probably pick up a few blasters/fat packs throughout the spring, too.

Topps collation is actually pretty reliable these days. You'll almost always get a set out of a jumbo box. If I were to open a clean case of hangers and then open the individual boxes, the collation would be fine there too. People need to understand that the shelves could be stacked from boxes from different cases, or all of the boxes with the same cards could just happen to wind up next to each other based on the way the shelf is stacked, etc. I open a TON of Series 1 from jumbos to hobby wax to retail, and at the end I always wind up with 2 sets that are about 20-30 cards away from completion and an equal amount of duplicates to go along with all of the complete sets I have.
Also...if anybody is looking for anything specific out of Series 1, let me know and I'll keep an eye out during my case breaking and sorting.

If you end with a set for sale, I would be happy to purchase from you again. Let me know. Thanks.

I will definitely have Series 1 sets available. I recognize this as a trading community so I try not to push my cards for sale too often out of respect for the site. But in general, if anybody is looking for sets and/or a specific card/team out of recent releases, I will gladly give you (TCDB community) first crack before putting it on my eBay store. Just let me know.

I've been buying a Jumbo hobby box for Series 1 & 2 for the last 3 or 4 years. I just ordered/purchased my box on eBay for $103.90.
I used to buy a regular Hobby box each series but as the inserts and parallel sets increased I started getting only about 2/3s of the base cards. I think last year was the first time I didn't get all the base cards from the Jumbo . I was maybe 10-12 cards short. A few of the missing base cards I did get, but they were a rainbow or gold or different color parallel.
Waiting and buying a Factory set is certainly a more cost effective way to get a set. I'll probably go that route in other 6 or 7 years after I retire. Like others have stated, I enjoy the mystery and excitement of opening the packs and the hope for getting that really big autograph or relic card. (It hasn't happened yet.)
I'd be interested in any Royals inserts or Royals Gold cards the community members pull and want to trade or sell. Please keep me in mind.
Thanks!

I do it this way, I get a case though. a lot of the times you will end up with more than one set and a lot of inserts that you can sell to get the money for series 2
