2011 Leaf Best of Baseball Cut Signatures Baseball Forum

I have been gifted one of these cards from Leaf Best of Baseball 2011 and the signature is on what looks ike a thick plastic tile stuck to the card. Does anyone know what material it is? And why Leaf did this instead of asking players to sign of a sheet of paper or something (or sign the cards?)

Any info and web links gratefully received.

Without a picture I believe at one point Leaf purchased the tiles from some company that went out of business. The tiles were originally intended to be attached to the base of a small statue of the player that was in production. My memeory might be off but something to that effect 

Yeah, they were supposed to go on the base of a Hartland-type statue but the company went out of business before they could attach them.
