Howdy all,
I'm working through all my base Topps (1974-present), Donruss (1981-2005, 2014-present) and Upper Deck (1989-2010) baseball sets to see where I'm missing info about errors and variations. I've posted in a couple of the Donruss forums and now that I've finished cataloging most of the stuff I picked up at the National, back into this project woriking backwards on my UDs.
Looks like there are a lot of vars not noted after 273 Wickman aside from the Encarnacion listed back in June and the Dice-K stuff. Looking through all the uploaded photos on the forum, the following backs show the "Series 2" error as well:
279, 285, 291 (the Encarnacion - no photo has been uploaded to the checklist), 303, 309, 315, 321, 327, 333, 340, 345, 351, 357, 369, 375, 393, 406, 411, 417, 423, 429, 435, 441, 447, 453, 459, 465, 471, 472, 473, 476, 477, 478, 480, 481, 482, 483, 484, 485, 486, 487, 489, 490, 495, 496, 497, 498, and 499.
I actually don't have the full set myself just yet (limited funds back in the late 00s and haven't swung back to finish some of those UD sets!) but minus a few cards I don't have at all, I have the same Series 2 variations as listed above, with no Series 1 versions of those.
However, I do have a handful of Series 2 variations where only Series 1 backs are currently uploaded to the checklist: those are 75, 99, 111, 117, 201, 291 (Ser 2 var listed but not uploaded), 386, 399, 474, 475, 479, 488, 491, 492 and 493. I'll add images of those in a reply in a bit.
There's a not-quite-pattern among these listings. Starting with 51, which seems to be the very first var, every sixth card appears to contain the "Series 2" var (incl. 75 which also has the "Baseball Series 1" vs. "Series 1 Baseball" var.) up to 87. Then it seems like there's a jump of seven cards to 94 for the next var, then a jump of five up to 99, and then back to the pattern of six for 105, 111, 117, 123, 129, and 135. Based on this, I wonder if there are Series 2 vars for 141 and 165, for instance, even though they're not pictured on the site and I don't have them. Does anyone else out there? Similarly, continuing the pattern, we might expect vars for 207 and 219.
The six-pattern holds until there's a seven-card jump 249 to 256, and then a jump of six again to card 262, then 5 up to 267, then back to jumps of six from 273 up to 333 (including presumably 297 though again I don't have it and it's not pictured here). Then we once again have a jump of 7 up to 340, five up to 345, and then back to 6 up to 375. Things get a bit wonky after that: I'm missing #s 381-382 so I don't know if the pattern jumps back up to six or seven - guessing six up to 381 since I then have 386 - and then would seem to jump up seven to 393 as on the list, then six up to 399 which I have, then seven again to 406, then five up to 411, then up six each time up to the first checklist card 471. (It looks like all of the CL cards may have a Series 2 variation.)
Now, although that maybe helps give a more complete picture of where all the Series 2 variations are, it of course doesn't confirm that there are corrected Series 1 versions in every case. Aside from #81 and the 291 Encarnacion that was just added, none of the current variation entries show a photo of a Series 1 card. I wonder if anyone has any of these to confirm their existence? Given the number of Series 2 variations I'm adding here, it stands to reason that most/all were caught and corrected, but I agree with your approach not to assume any of that without photo evidence!
Hope all this helps anyone building out their UD master sets - the maybe 4 or 5 of you out there lol. (As an aside, as someone who's been collecting for more than 35 years, it's hard to go to the National each year now and see the hobby having largely become a commodities exchange vs. being a hobby of collecting cards anymore. Glad there are still a few places like this left for people who still collect and don't just invest/flip/profit and happy to contribute to it as much as I can!)
