History, folks, history. Surprised a couple of you long-time members didn't pick up on this.
At one point, the auto-linking of PIDs required names (all names in a sport) be totally unique. "Tony Pena (P)" was needed so it wouldn't link to "Tony Pena" (catcher). This is why this is so prevalent in the database - when the database first came online, and for the first 4 or 5 years of it, this is how it was done.
Admin, through years of enhancing the system, adding aliases, ability to edit PIDs (remember when we couldn't do that?), and other things has helped us be able to get the names "as they appear on the cards". Now we can simply use "Tony Pena" and if it gets incorrectly linked to the wrong Tony Pena, we can simply change the PID.
This is WHY - which answers the orignal question in the thread. And this is why there are several others in the database this way. That, and the fact that these certain names are listed this way on other sites that have checklists.
