It is done, unfortunately their is nothing like "Release Notes" or "Trivia" section where an explanation of the first four cards can be explained, so I created an external link titled "Explanation on "Adriano Rosario" with a link to his baseball-reference.com page where it mentions the name change.

History, folks, history. Surprised a couple of you long-time members didn't pick up on this.

At one point, the auto-linking of PIDs required names (all names in a sport) be totally unique. "Tony Pena (P)" was needed so it wouldn't link to "Tony Pena" (catcher). This is why this is so prevalent in the database - when the database first came online, and for the first 4 or 5 years of it, this is how it was done.

Admin, through years of enhancing the system, adding aliases, ability to edit PIDs (remember when we couldn't do that?), and other things has helped us be able to get the names "as they appear on the cards". Now we can simply use "Tony Pena" and if it gets incorrectly linked to the wrong Tony Pena, we can simply change the PID.

This is WHY - which answers the orignal question in the thread. And this is why there are several others in the database this way. That, and the fact that these certain names are listed this way on other sites that have checklists.

Yes I see now some of the reasons and understand why now.   Like my Roy Helu / Roy Helu Jr.   Same player but not all cards show the Jr. on them.

Was there a posting about the brith month/year  (instead of their postions) to all pllayers that had the same names?

To add to the Tony Pena confusion, Tony Pena Jr. was a shortstop who became a pitcher later in his career.  So be sure you are dealing with the right pitcher if you are moving things around!

The "Adriano Rosario" Tony Pena only played for the Diamondbacks system I believe.

@budler -- Any similar names, we now use "(b.YYYY)", preferably no space between the period and year. If it's a fictional character, differentiate by putting where fans would know them from, e.g. (animal) or (Marvel) or (Doctor Who). I don't know if we've run into any issues with names and birthyears matching exactly.
