2017 Topps Legends of WWE Wrestling Forum

I just read about this set on the release calendar. By my count, it will be the 8th WWE Topps release of 2017.  That's too many, if you ask me. Especially considering they keep using the same photos over and over and over.

Our WalMart now has a WWE Diva set in the card section here in teh GWN. Have never seen WWE cards and suddenly these show up. Must be a new supplier or something.

 I don't collect WWE but Topps needs to produce many and varied sets to stay in business.   And we need them to stay in business.

There are never too many cards. I'd rather be chasing cards for decades than not have any to chase.

That's the key.  You said "Varied".  Same root word as "Variety".  Some of these wrestlers, Topps only seems to own one photo of, so they keep using that same photo, over and over and over.  If there were variety, I would be all in. I just feel like they keep selling me the same card, with a different border.  Keep in mind, WWE has maybe 50 active wrestlers (maybe around 75 when you count NXT and 205 Live).  It's not like baseball where they have 30 teams of 25 players to pick from.

How about this suggestion, would you be on board with it- they should make 2 WWE sets a year.  The first is the flagship set and they could make it a big set having cards for all the current wrestlers (including 205 and NXT) as well as some of the backstage guys like Vince and... forgot who is backstage (I think Arn and Kidman are still there), and also devote some to the Legends.  They could release it as Series One and Series Two, and depending on set size, maybe even Update if they decide to have wrestlers switch brands.  Then they could do whatever inserts they want.  I think maybe a 300 card set wouldn't be terrible maybe 250 (split into 125 each series).

The second set could be the Heritage or Archives or whatever they want to call it.  Make it a smaller set, say 125 cards and feature a mix of Legends and current wrestlers.

As for the photos, I don't get why they can't use different photos for the people.  Its one of the reasons I stopped buying them as it seemed too repititive.  I'll look some up sometimes, but don't think I need another photo of Dusty standing posed in polka dots again.

I also don't get why Topps and WWE don't actually advertise these sets on their shows and Networks.  Not sure the last time I've seen a commercial for cards in general, but I think it would be smart since their audience is now geared towards families, start them young, lol.

The photo duplication is due to the fact that they have to pay for the photos, they don't have their own photographers anymore. Paying for one photo and reusing it is more cost effective than paying for multiple photos.

They get the baseball images from Getty, but I don't know about the wrestling images.

That's the thing, Jupiter... they already do that.  They call Series 2 "Then, Now, Forever" and this is the 2nd year of it.  I would go along with your idea. I would even concede the Super-premium, whatever it's called, as a third set. But I don't need the NXT, Legends, and Women's sets when all those are included in the base sets, with the same photos.

I will add that it's a lot less annoying if you sort your cards by set rather than by player/wrestler.  I'm kind of modifying how I sort (again) so maybe it won't bug me as much.

During the 70s and 80s,  Topps used a lot of freelance photographers.   Not sure if they did before that or after that but a buddy of mine did freelance work for them.   Most of the shots were taken at the Vet in Philly, Yankee Stadium or spring training.     I would doubt if they have their own photogs especially today.
