is it really a variation if the pattern is random (or non random every other card) throughout the entire set?

maybe that is just printing differences, which are collectable by some but not necessarily documented in annual price guides or on here..

Now that the Factory set has been added as a parallel, is what I did for #492 acceptable to highlight the difference in Note2?  I'm thinking there's no need to add VAR in Note1/Note2 or else all cards in both sets would end up under the Errors/Variations link.

If they were in the same set, yes. Since they are separate sets, let's get the images in there, and then that's all we need - we have the visual that shows the difference.

That's great. I think anything that helps differentiate these very similar cards is s good thing! I have more than 100 of them that I don't yet know how to list but that looks like it will be changing soon.

Great!!! I have @20 monsters of '88 Donruss. Now I have to sort out a Factory Set and Pack Set. Yikes! More work. Don't tell me other years have similar pattern differences?

Just 90 & 91D, but there's a multitude of other variations from Donruss around those years.  Hopefully 91D will be sorted out soon.

And 1989 had a difference in the backs.

The 1987 Donruss factory set reverses the orientation of the back of the card relative to the front, but this isn't something that could be easily shown in the image layout format we have here at TCDB. I'm not sure if there are other cosmetic differences as its been awhile since I've put two of the cards (pack pulled and factory set) side by side.
