I found someone selling a Tony Gwynn Rave Reviews on eBay in full-card form (not die cut like the pictures show). It doesn't have any "Promo" or "Sample" stampings like I figured it might. Has anyone heard of this alternate version for any of the other cards and maybe have more information?

Seems fishy. Same seller also has Nomar, Clemens, A-Rod, Gonzalez, Walker, Cruz, and Maddux.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Hm, the Gwynn at least looks legit - I didn't see the others. I know Pacific almost always labeled their samples as such, but I know close to nothing about Circa. If they were in fact samples, especially those given to dealers, it might make sense one person could have several of the players.
Certainly curious if anyone else has even one of these.

OK, thanks! I'm sure most of you guys/gals here know way more than me so I'll defintely trust your instincts.
When you say fishy, you don't mean fake though, right? Just fishy in that being backdoored means basically stolen from the printing or warehousing facility?

Yes, backdoored as in an employee snuck uncut cards out the "backdoor"...STOLE them.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

OK, yeah that's damn fishy.
I'm curious how owning cards like this is viewed in the community. It's probably impossible to tell how many times ownership has changed and whether one might be buying directly from a thief or just someone who came across them in a collection or is third down the line, etc. Clearly, supporting someone if they said they outright stole them seems super crappy, but is any type of ownership of backdoored cards frowned upon?

The fact that someone is selling items that are of unknown prigin just shows their level of sneakiness. There are plenty of resources to turn to as a means of detecting the legitimacy of the cards you're attempting to sell.

When Skybox/Fleer went belly up a lot of products such as these and many other cool collectables were put up for auction. This goes for other companies as well.
Yes there are some back doored items out there, but there are also legitimate oddball collectables as well. I own a few.
I have seen the Gwynn that is mentioned and would like to have it in my collection, but if it is still a $75 asking price, then I personally think it is too much for a card that looks cooler when it has been die cut.
