I was waiting for someone to say that. Being half-Ukrainian, I should know better.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

My paternal grandparents belonged to a Ukranian Ortodox church, and growing up I was always told we were Ukranian. Our last name is the Ukranian word for the color black. I've done some research and found that my grandparent's grandparents who emigrated to the US came from villages in an area that is now eastern Slovakia. It was the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. That's about as far back as I've gotten in my research. But who knows how much they moved around the trans-carpathian region. I probably do have ancestors who were born in the Ukraine proper.

I'm sure that's virtually the same phonetically. We spell it Charney now, but that spelling could just as likely have been set by a worker at Ellis Island as any conscious decision by a family member.

Lea D Foote, sounds similar to my family history, my grandfather was born Polish but after WW1 borders were changed and he became Ukranian after the governments all agreed to new lines. My last name is Patan which I have been told is Czech in origin and have actually met a Ukranian fellow from my grandpa's birth city and has seen the name before he came to Canada in the 90s.
