So two weeks ago I was my favorite card shop and a young man and his mother came in. He is just getting started in the hobby and was looking to build a set of Superbowl MVP winners cards. He did not appear to have a lot of money to spend so I Offered to help him out. He showed me his list and i reviewed my extras in my collection and said that I would gladly help him. With his mothers permission I got his name and address. When I got home I started to put a few together and realized that it would just be easier to send him all my extras from the 1990 Pro Set Football MVP's set. It turned out to be almost a complete set so I sent it anyway. In the mail yesterday I received a Hand drawn card from him thanking me and informing me that with my help he only needs two more cards to complete his quest.
I didn't ask for anything for the cards as I was just paying it forward.
P.S. he is 11 years old

That IS an awesome story! It's great to see kids get interested in the hobby. But it's even better to see one so young have a collecting goal. I would love to see/hear how he expands upon that goal in the future. We all know how completing one goal leads to making another goal to reach.

My girlfriend's nephew (12 years old) is interested in baseball cards and I have been trying to help encourage him. I gave him a box of cards for Christmas, hand sorted, mostly Cubs since he likes lots of the Cubs players but also some local players and mid range cards to help him on his way. As many of us collectors get older it is nice to see a new crop of card collectors coming forward.

That is just the lift I needed today after getting very troubling news this morning of a coworkers sudden passing. The ying and the yang of life. .

Always looking for Blackhawk hockey, Notre Dame Football, White Sox and Bears Stuff. I have a plaque in my card room that says, "I could have been a millionaire but my mom threw out my baseball cards". How apropos!!! Collecting Chicago Blackhawks Hockey, Doug Wilson Hockey, Chicago Bears Older, Notre Dame Football in their college jerseys and Chicago White Sox.

First off I am only one of many who will commend you on your good deeds. I too hope to do the same in the future, one of my mantras will be free cards for kids six and under. Only way to keep them interested is feed the thrill. Sounds terrible at first but it is important to teach them some things are OK to induldge in. =)
Agreed hawkking, its great to here good stories when one is in the crook and not on the hilltop. Last week for us was VERY stressful, my first week of full disability came with unknowns from banking to family health. The wife had to deal with a very ill grandparent and I learned just how quickly your stature can be tossed aside by people in suits. But alas stories like this and my cave help in the interm. However another week kicks in to full swing tomorrow. All I do is keep my hands busy and my brain shut off LOL. Tomorrow the appraisal team comes out to value our property. Fingers crossed.
