Unfortunately that's the business of baseball now. The Luxury Tax setup requires the bigger market teams to reset regularly. Sad to see him leave Boston, but I would not give any player a 12 year contract. There is no way to justify 12 years unless you sign the kid at 20 years old and then you can't really justify that unless you have a Tatis Jr or Soto type of talent. Mookie at 20 certainly didn't project that type of talent. Mookie was not resigning
A lot of this present problem is Dombrowski making some very foolish deals coming off the World Series win. Sale and Eovaldi didn't need to signed for as much as they were. Eovaldi was signed as a reward for the World Series extra inning performance, tremendous effort but hardly worth the pile of money and length of contract that was thrown his way especially with his injury history. Sale, also with his injury history and lack of endurance, should probably have been let play through last year before making a decision on resigning him. Steve Pearce is another contract that didn't need to be made even being a "relatively" small commitment.
I am not sad to see Price moved. I've never liked or trusted him. Snarky and injury prone. Would have been nice to dump more of the money on the Dodgers but so be it. Maybe it will work out as well as the last big deal with the Dodgers.
Hopefully this reset really works as a reset and the Sox rebound quickly. With the cap reset, they can dive back in, you know they're not afraid to spend Henry's money. Let's hope they exercise a little more common sense than was exercised after 2018
