A recent discussion made me aware of some listings on TCDb for cards that only made their way into the hobby after the card company that made them went out of business.  I understand that these listings are only for cards that were not included in the regular product release, not for simple overruns that are missing a serial number.

If these listings are officially allowed by Admin, I'm wondering if it would make sense for there to be an 'Aftermarket' category available in the Inserts & Related section; like Insert, Promo, Mail-In, etc., and Aftermarket.

This type of 'set' fits better as a Mail-In than an Insert, but that category doesn't seem quite right either.  Thoughts?

I prefer the company of people who disagree with me for the right reasons over the company of those who agree with me for the wrong reasons.

IMO, only cards actually released by the producing company should be listed. If cards bought from a bankruptcy sale are allowed, how about cards backdoored (stolen) by employees? I don't see a difference.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Admin gave the OK two years ago to list these types of cards as long as they're clearly identified as such and not included with the regular base or insert sets. The following is an exact quote:

If the card company purposefully made these as a promo or as a test or as replacements or for some other reason and just didn't distribute them via the normal means, but now they're available in enough quantities that collectors can track them down, put together a full set, they're recognized by card retailers, graded, etc., I think we're limiting ourselves by not including in the database.  As long as things are clearly labeled and explained in the release notes, it gives collectors an avenue by which to identify these items that they might encounter out there.

Admin may consider an "Aftermarket" category under Inserts/Related if there are enough examples like Collector's Edge, Fleer, etc.; otherwise everything usually gets listed as an "Insert".

I think that one got listed under Promo because there was no version that was offered publicly, like the inserts that have a serial number but ones without them were backdoored.
