Looking for help with some issues loading photos to the site.
I’m trying to help clean up an area that I have a good deal of knowledge on – Baltimore Orioles team issued postcards/photocards. I have about 95% of all the postcards issued by the Orioles since 1954 in my collection. Many of the current checklists are missing, incomplete, and lacking photos. While these postcards may not be of interest to most members on the site, I’ve received several requests from others wanting my photo checklists to help them organize their collections. Members have them on their wantlists, but get confused as to what they have/need.
Here’s what I need help with.
- I’m currently working on updating the 1970-1974 checklists. From 1970-72, the Orioles used the same photo for most of the players. The only difference being name placement or font. There were a few photos already loaded into the site, but they are the wrong year. I need to get the wrong photo deleted so I can load the correct one.
- By design, these postcards were used for autograph requests, so some of mine are autographed. I know the site doesn’t want photos with autographs, but I figured I would load them anyway and they would be marked for replacement. Since I'm the only one with them currently in my collection, better to have a photo marked for replacement than no photo at all. Some are getting loaded, while others are being marked as the wrong photo for the set. The photo is correct, just autographed. It looks like some I submitted with autographs were swapped out with another photo without an autograph. For example, a 1972 postcard I submitted with an autograph is pictured as the 1971 postcard without the autograph and says it was submitted by me. It was not.
I’m confused to the best way to help get everything updated correctly. I submitted some IR messages about name corrections and they have been fixed, but my messages about bad photos haven’t. Help or suggestions from those that know more about fixing photos is appreciated. I want to make it easy on everyone. Thanks.

So instead of putting images of signed photos on a separate image hosting site, you purposely added scans which you knew were not acceptable on this site?

If you're uploading new scans and the old ones are still showing, try using ctrl-F5 on those pages.

Not sure about the tone of your response. I'm not very tech savvy and don't know what a separate image hosting site is. Just trying to help out other Orioles collectors on the site with information I have. Maybe what I'm trying to do can't be done within site rules. Just looking for help.

Dan,
Thanks that seemed to work on a few I did. What's the best way to replace an existing photo? I don't see anywhere to click to replace an existing photo. I'm looking at the 1972 Baltimore Orioles Photocards - Paul Blair postcard. The current picture is the 1970 postcard and I want to update to the 1972 postcard. Appreciate the help.

Keep entering the Inaccuracy Reports (IRs), and we'll process them to get them removed. When images are in the incorrect place and can't be moved, it requires Admin to do the final approval of such, and so sometimes it takes a while, whereas moving images is up to the members with higher permission levels to approve those (moves happen relatively quickly). Thanks for the fixes you've put in.

He's referring to this comment:

Mike is one of our regular IR resolvers and I can see where this comment would be irritating knowing you're uploading scans that need to be tagged for replacement immediately after upload, which would be like someone uploading photos on purpose just so we can go through and mark those for immediate replacement too. That usually isn't how things are done here. Free image hosting sites are out there to upload photos or scans, then you can link to those online images in trades, auctions, blogs, etc.

My apologies to Mike and those who approve photos on the site. My intention was never to cause extra work as reportedly I don’t know the process. I do feel an explanation of my comment is needed.
Team issued postcards are different from baseball cards. Most baseball cards have some means of identification by year, manufacturer, etc. Orioles postcards don’t have any means of identification except the combined knowledge of those of us who collect them. A checklist doesn’t help without a photo in most cases. While baseball cards aren’t usually designed to be autographed and in most cases collectors prefer them not signed, the Orioles produced the postcards to be a tool for players to respond to fan autograph requests. Most postcard collectors want them autographed and finding them that way is common.
I noticed very few of the Orioles postcards on the site had photos attached and many of those are attached to the wrong year. I’ve had several site members with postcards in their collection and no idea what they had contact me for help organizing them by year. My thought was having a photo on the site to help with identification was better than no photo. I still don’t understand how a separate image hosting site will help collectors using the site identify postcards they have, but I’m still learning. LOL
I will continue to try and upload as many updates as the site allows and help any collectors that contact me for info. Again sorry for the extra work I caused.

Based upon the difficulty of identifying Baltimore Orioles photocards (team issued postcards) without photos, Admin has allowed me to post photos with autographs. This will be a great help, since the purpose of the postcards was for players to respond to autograph requests from fans through the mail and finding many of them without autographs is tough. Anyone who determines that they have one of the postcards, without the autograph, please feel free to submit a replacement photo. Thanks to Admin for the help in better cataloging these sets.

But you don't replace images flagged for replacement with the same incorrect image (as you did about a dozen times today). The purpose of the postcards back then is not the same as that of this site.
If scans are flagged for a purpose, please do not disrespect those that try to maintain the cleanliness of the database by trying to 'fix' them. Users might not know which are correct if there is no mention of needing a better image.
