The main reason I am here is to create an accounting, and proof/evidence(?), of my collection for situations like an insurance claim, an appraisal, or something my wife can use to get help in selling should i become disabled or die.
If anyone has any advice for me, like "what to do/what not to do" or features you don't want to miss, etc. I'd really appreciate it. Also feedback if whether using this site is the best idea for what I'm trying to accomplish or if in addition to this I should be doing something else would also be appreciated.
Thank you!

I didn't come here for this, but my insurance agent told me the best thing for documenting my collection in the event of a loss is to have an inventory of what I have. I showed my agent this site and my collection and they were blown away by the accounting of it and they were more than satifsfied that this would be adequate for this. So yes, this should be just fine to inventory your collection in the event of a loss or death. I'm actually inventorying a friend's collection here and did my brother's full collection on this site for those reasons. The pricing here is not to be 100% trusted, but honestly, it gives you a great start because what is value, but what someone else is willing to pay for it.
As for tips and tricks, just enter away. If you can't find a card, search by the player's name, then by year/make and honestly - Card Number. That will help you find the set that your card belongs in if you can't find it. The no number (NNO) cards are tricky if it is obscure.
What brought me here was a way to try to complete some sets. I have loved using the transaction feature to match my doubles and extras or cards I simply don't have interest in keeping for cards on my wantlist with the hundreds or thousands of other users here. I'm nearly at 1,000 completed and successful trades and I've been able to collect so much more than I originally wanted to (and my wife wanted me to for that matter). I thought it would be great to finish the sets from when I was a kid - 1980 to 1992. Then finish the more modern sets after I stopped collected and went to college (1992 to present). I then tried to do all the Topps sets since I was alive and have completed that and more! Now I'm working on 1970-1972 topps baseball. I just finished 1981-1992 Topps football and I might someday finish 1993-present on those football sets.
Welcome to the site!

This is a fascinating post Eric! There are MANY more reasons to be part of this outstanding Community of Card Collectors. Yours is a good one as it has some merit, but may depend on the parameters set by Your insurance company. Having an accurate accounting of Your Collection is important and TCDB is a helpful way to go about getting Your cards inventoried well.
On another note, along the same area of thinking & planning ahead for Our loved Ones, my Wife of 32+ Years (Who also happens to be a very gifted Accountant and VERY business savvy) , brought up an interesting point. It is a good idea to have an LCS Friend or Collector-friendly LCS that would be helpful during an untimely event in Your Life as Collector. Ideally, being able to pass along to a younger Family Member is probably the best case scenario, but that might not be the case for many of Us. Although my Son or Daughter will definitely be as much help (if not more) to my Beloved Wife, than my own LCS Friend. Appreciate Your insightful planning, as this is very thoughtful towards those that are important to You in Life. Welcome to Our TCDB Community and hoping that You find this a wonderful Place to enhance Your enjoyment of Our worthwhile Hobby!!
Yours in The Journey - Felix

I originally joined because it looked like a great website to get answers when I was heavy on making YouTube videos. But I never did anything with it. So I ended up buying a large collection and this site helped me get organized and my cards have never been organized as much. Now as I organize my cards more and more this community has been a delight for everyday involvement. I am typically only on forums during work, but it makes my work day go faster.

I gotta say i didnt think of using TCDB for insurance purposes gotta say that is a great idea! I currently am using my instagram page as my "just in Case" for insurance purposes posting only cards I currently own. Now that you say this I definitely should put mine in here too as a secondary way to verify what i currently own.
Thank You!

I only heard of this site on a Facebook group for digital cards. That was last February. I gave it a try for just storing my collection. A couple months later I tried trading and absolutely love it! I can get dupes out of my basement and off to new homes where they are needed. In turn, I can get cards I need to finish sets or add to my Boston collection. I also like that we can all pitch in and add images and keep the catalog up to date.

I joined 5 yrs. ago. Just happened to do an internet search and came upon the site. I have my own database that I use to catalog my cards but also have some of my collection listed here. I found out using this site, that I have cards that cannot be found on alot of other sites, and also this site with all the other members input give a more true checklist of the cards in a given set, whether it be an error card, variation etc. etc.
I also like that I can also help out with adding scans of cards that I have, and all the other permissions you get as you move up the points ladder. The community of collectors here are very helpful on answering any concerns or questions that you may have.

I ran across TCDB early after it's inception, but wasn't actually adding to my collection at the time,
so didn't join.....
Beckett had dropped their Racing Card magazine, so when I managed to grab a huge bundle, I needed
a place to keep track and find out what actually existed, so hunted the site back up....
Have been hot and cold on collecting over the last 5 years, so anytime someone wants a trade,
the heat goes back up on my interest in adding to and organization.....

I joined a little less then a year ago. I originally joined because I was excited about being able to catalog the entire collection, (a long process, as I was quick to learn,) but a fun one. I then realized the possibility of trading. The super collector in me has kept me to trading the cards that I have 2 of, (in case my first copy suffered extreme damage or was outright destroyed,) but I had enough inventory to complete my first trade 5 months later, and a rather big one. (400 cards.) Here I am with almost 60 trades under my belt today and still going strong. It has definitely taught me new things about collecting and has been a blessing to my collecting life. I'm sure it might be to you too.
