Forgive me if this is something that has been discussed previously, I wasn't able to find any similar discussions in the forums. Anyone else have any strong feelings towards adding a "displayed uniform" listing for each card in addition to the current "team listing" each card has? I wouldn't want to change anything about the current team listing dynamic where whatever team is listed as text or logo on the card is used regardless of what uniform the player is in, just add an additional notation so we can search for cards with player photos of specific uniforms.
For instance I know there are plenty of people here who collect teams, but don't have interest in a card of a player who may have been recently signed or drafted by their favorite team but do not appear in that uniform. Or, as in my case, I collect cards with Oregon St Beavers players, but don't really have interest in the common practice of rookie cards depicting them in training camp or combine gear. I know there is also a drastic difference in valuation of cards depicting college unis vs pro unis, so this isn't just a cosmetic consideration. We could go simple and just list the team of the jersey, or we could get way into the weeds and have listings like "Oregon State Beavers - Senior Bowl" (if the player is wearing their college helmet but the Senior Bowl jersey) or things like "New York Jets - Throwback" or "San Francisco 49ers - Color Rush".
I apologize to the Admin if the through of adding another trait to each 15,596,459 cards on the site give them database hives, but I think this could add another beneficial way to organize, trade and enjoy our cards.

Please understand where I come from when I beat an idea up. :) Understand that when I come up with an idea for the site, I kill it 5 times over before I bring it to a couple of my good friends on here, kill it a couple more times, then take it to Admin (or put it in the New Feature Tracker). I'm a software tester by profession. This is the way I think. The reason I'll beat up the ideas is to make the ideas better for the actual presentation.
Now, for the idea beating (not a "you" beating).
You mention 15 million plus cars on the site. This would not apply to 7 of the 15 categories we have. Let's call that about 2 million of the cards. So we're still talking 13 million cards in team sports. Baseball is the bulk, at 5 million cards. Now, the question is, how often does this happen? This would be such a small percentage of the total cards, would something like this be worth putting in for the masses?
So let's say we've said yes, let's do it. Great. Now, how? Where does this field go on the card's page? In the checklist when you're importing? On the collection pages? On the PDF printable pages?
When a team's page is selected, which cards show on that page? Only the ones where the players are pictured? Only the ones where they are listed? Both? Wouldn't one of those defeat the purpose of the other?
I'm not saying it's a bad idea (I don't think it is). I'm saying it's an idea that wasn't thought through far enough to give it life (yet). Answer those questions, and I'm sure as you answer them, you'll see the other questions that could come up. Answer those as well. Then bring this back to the table.

I really like that idea. In my mind it would go down in the area where the major league affiliate is for baseball cards.
There are a LOT of cards that depict a player on one team but show them in the uniform of another. This is extremely prevalent in Panini NBA sets but was seen on cards from all the other companies as well as in other sports. When you're talking inserts and parallels from Panini you're looking at in some cases 200 cards...the base set is only 300 cards max.
I think it would be most useful if just used for the players appearing in one uniform but tagged to another team. The details given like the Color Rush would be better served with a userlist, like my userlist of throwback jerseys worn in the NBA. An alternate uniform tag would be something useful that could be implemented as well.
To break down Dan's breakdowns: where on page I already covered. Importing I don't think it would be supported like affiliate or even no team cards are done now.
The collection pages is a sticking point I have not worked through yet. As I collect everything for the sport, that's really irrelevant to me, I only use the personal and set pages, not team pages. It needs further discussion.
I don't do PDFs, I don't even know how to get into PDFs, so I have no thought in that.
On the team pages, say a player was on the Knicks and shows him in a Knicks uniform. But he got traded and now plays for the Jazz. Currently, the only team his cards would show up for is the Jazz. If this was implemented, his cards would show up on the pages for the Jazz and the Knicks. So if you clicked the Knicks PID, It would show all cards where the photo is of a person who played for the Knicks, in a Knicks uniform, regardless of where he got traded to. Yet, it's still a Jazz card and would still show up there ..and!...the person who is now a Knick would also show up on the Jazz listing in his Jazz uniform even though he's no longer a member of that team.
It would serve no purpose for player collectors but for team collectors it would be a huge help in finding the cards that show their team, but they currently have no way to search for other than looking at every single card.

Ryan Leaf wearing a San Diego Chargers uniform on a Buccaneers team card ... I still have nightmares about that one!

I think Dan covered the logistical stuff you'd need to work through to make a solid suggestion to Admin so I'll just add that sometimes what works in a case like this and is much simpler is to create a user list. That's something you can do yourself if you don't mind doing the work of looking at every image of every player (in some cases outside of the site if we lack them) to figure out what meets your criteria. I've thought about possibly doing something like that with Michigan Football (and maybe the other sports) in my collection.
Anyway, good luck if you decide to think through this idea more and submit it as a feature request.

Oh, I understand it's no small endeavor, I've done enough database management to know it's a lot more than just "Add field: New Stuff!" and expecting it all to work out. That's more why I put it here, instead of the new feature tracker. I don't at all mind a bit of software devils advocate, but this has been rattling around in my head long enough that I think it has some merit and I honestly do think it would be a beneficial addition here.
To answer your first question I can really only speak from expertise on football, which is only ~22% of the cards listed here, but the circumstances I describe are absolutely not limited to just that. It is a modern practice to display new draft picks and signings in college or former pro uniforms and list them under the new team name, so it's not really going away. I'd say it's even going to get worse with companies like Panini and Fanatics buying exclusive rights to sports, with other companies forced to airbrush any logos they don't have the rights to out of their photos. I believe it would be very helpful to collectors to be able to filter out airbrushed or blank jerseys (like this https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/67166/cid/4931796/2012-Bowman-116-Russell-Wilson?PageIndex=1) when they browse their team uni collection. Heck there might be even some Pokemon collectors out there that only want cards with Jesse & James wearing official Team Rocket unis.
As for the web design aspect of it the new field need not have a front and center position; we can still defer to Team Listing in things like the checklist, PDF printable pages, etc. As far I've seen in the community the Team Listing is well understood and adhered to when inputting new cards. Logos and stated team names retain their primacy. Beckett does it this way and most of the checklists that people can find out there are like this and it would be a mistake to change that. I think the coolest aspect of this idea would collectors being able to click on the specific uniform like (just like the team link) and see all the cards that share that same uniform. Currently, if I wanted to collect all of the cards out there with a player wearing the Oregon State colors, I'd have to go to the Schools section, click each player that when to Oregon State, and manually sort through the pictures in each player and see if they have their college uni. Sorting by just Oregon State in the team listing only gets me the ones where the pro team isn't listed at all. As for doing this in a user list, well that would end up pretty limited. Those get abandoned by lack of interest, are only managed by one person, are generally never all inclusive, etc. Making it an official feature would make it something that everyone can participate in and give the real passionate sorters another trait to add to their collection.
Adding a new field to the card page itself shouldn't be a problem. There is plenty of room for another card trait to be displayed without it being too busy (if my 5 minute bodge job is any indication: https://imgur.com/a/Bz6MnOe).
And to reiterate the utility of the uniform distinction, I have two recent examples. Both are Patrick Mahomes rookie cards from 2017, both from rather entry level brands, unnumbered, ungraded but in pack fresh condition. The Panini card sold for $19 with 5 bids. The Donruss card sold for $236.50 with 46 bids. The only real difference is that the Donruss card featured Mahomes in his Chiefs uni while the Panini he was still wearing his Texas Tech uni. Both are listed on the database as Chiefs cards.

Just so that everyone has correct facts in this thread - Affiiliates ARE supported in the import process.
Also, would this be a field that would need to be populated? Would it need to be in reports? Validation?
Please remember that one change in a database has a ripple effect across MANY areas. Why do you think there are so many issues now that the grouping of collections for a multiple copies of a single card has been more fully implemented? It was never really a good idea, and now we're seeing why. And even that took 2-3 years from the time of suggestion to implementation.
Again, as a software tester who is reading these "requirements" and trying to formulate test cases from them, I ask that all aspects of a new field be fully considered when proposing such a change.

They do not produce minor league cards for basketball and NASCAR doesn't work that way, nor would it have relevance to non sports...it's literally never come for what I have knowledge in. I was unaware that you could upload affiliate at the same time.
By definition of what it is it would not possibly be for a full set. (With the possible exception of expansion team sets)
It would have to be something that is only enabled where applicable.

It isn't searchable, but all the work I've been doing with updating MEM Note2s, I've been putting the swatch team in that field if it differs from the primary Team assignment on the card. (EX: "MEM: Jersey (Rangers)" on an A-Rod Yankees card)

What if the Uniform listing was added in the form of a Tag? Perhaps not included in the same tag category (with batboys and baldness) so that doesn't get cluttered with both uniform and the tags that are already there, but Tags seem a lower touch way to add them.
