What sets are eligible to be considered for rookie cards for sets before 1948? I was looking at the 1960 Topps Coaches subset and saw some were marked RC but not others. I gave Lum Harris an RC but then decided to stop and ask before I did any more. Some of the coaches did not have an RC in their entire history. Pete Reiser even had an XRC, which I thought only applied to Update / Traded sets.

Coaches and Managers don't get RCs. Might as well put RCs on Trainers, Staff, Owners, Batboys, Umps, Refs, Cheerleaders, Administrators, and every person in Non-Sport. A non-player first card is not an RC. A first card of a retired player is not an RC.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Is this the policy or an opinion? I have seen many managers / coaches with RC already posted here and I feel like a guy like Earl Weaver might have increased interest in his 1969 "rookie" card. Also, which pre-1948 sets are considered eligible for RC consideration?

Only Major Releases are eligible for RCs.

I guess my question is which pre-1948 sets are major issues? 1933 Goudey? 1939-41 Play Ball?

If you go to the year pages, you'll see which sets are listed in the Major Releases section. There are many, and it would be impossible to list them all here.

Thanks! That's the answer I was looking for.
Now, what is your take on the managers / coaches rookie card thing? Players only?

Everything Dan said is TCDB Policy, not his personal opinion. That is the way Admin handles all such cards. While it may be the "opinion" of Admin, it is still the policy on this site.

OK, thanks. I was just trying to determine the TCDb policy on RCs. So now I know when I see any manager or coach cards labeled RC I should remove the RC note.

I have the following questions about RC designations:
What about CFL cards?
What about Japanese Baseball cards?
What about European issued cards?
