It's true, but several people decided they were going to ignore the guidelines and do it anyway, changing how the Database works to meet their desires. Later people have come along and seen it done, like you, and thought it was correct. 

Exactly why the Guidelines were made and need to be engrained into the home page so that all new members see and read it, I feel sorry for your three years of work, but ......................................... =(
